About the Book

The book presents the MADRID RIO PROJECT (2005-2011), as a paradigmatic solution to the typical problem of voids and cracks in contemporary consolidated urban fabric: a large-scale intervention which tackles the restitution of an open wound in the consolidated city center by means of a totally new operation. The answer here was to build an artificial landscape over a large infrastructure of relocated underground road tunnels, along the course of the river. Six contemporary landscapes show the different ways of integrating the river in the urban center, transforming it into a new urban connector. The park, almost four miles long, crosses the city from north to south and offers all kinds of leisure activities: pedestrian and cycling lanes, sports pitches, playground areas for children, a riverside beach, kiosks, restaurants, scenic viewpoints, flooded areas, spaces where temporary events can be staged and a large cultural center.Conceived as an almost epic adventure, the construction of these landscapes represents a precise and rigorous attitude when approaching the project more from a geographical discipline than an architectural one, favouring the regeneration of a space previously inaccessible to the public, transforming it into an area of new opportunities immediately conquered.
This macro Project was carried out by a unique team made up of four architect studios with a total of ninety people. The headquarters of the team
were situated in an office in the north of Madrid, in which the 30,000 plans needed to carry out the work were drawn. The four architect offices
responsible for the design are Burgos&Garrido Arquitectos, Porras La Casta Arquitectos, Rubio&Alvarez-Sala Arquitectos and West 8 Landscape
and Urban Planning Architects. The completion of this work by the four studios has been a realisation of global dimensions. Francisco Burgos and Gines Garrido founded Burgos&Garrido Arquitectos in 2002. Both are doctors of architecture and professors at Madrid's School of Architecture. They are currently building the last international competitions already won, the Residence of the Spanish Embassy in Canberra, Australia and the Lent-Tabor Footbridge in Maribor, Slovenia. Fernando Porras-Isla and Arantxa La Casta founded Porras La Casta Arquitectos in 1988. They have edited the specialized magazines Arquitectura and Bau. Their recent building the sports centre in San Felices de Buelna won the architectural award from the Cantabria Architects Association. They are currently working on a project for a school in Mejicanos, Republic of El Salvador. Carlos Rubio and Enrique Alvarez-Sala founded Rubio&Alvarez-Sala in 1980. They taught at Madrid's School of Architecture until 2006. They recently finished the SyV Tower in the former sports fields of Real Madrid. They are currently working on Landmark Tower in Ryad, Saudi Arabia. West 8 is an office for urban design and landscape architecture founded in 1987. West 8's main office is based at the port of Rotterdam, and has three branch offices in Belgium, New York and Toronto. They are currently building the last competitions already won, Governors Island Park in the New York Harbour and Toronto's Waterfront Project.
