In der Ethik hätte es ursprünglich um die Frage nach dem guten menschlichen Leben gehen sollen. Im Laufe der Geschichte hat sich jedoch immer mehr die Moral in den Vordergrund gedrängt, bis schließlich die Frage nach der Lebensgestaltung ganz aus dem Blickfeld geriet. Dieses Buch stellt die Frage, wie und warum es dazu gekommen ist. Was hat die Menschen dazu bewegt, das Sollen und die moralischen Imperative zu wollen statt ihr Wollen in einem geglückten Leben zu realisieren? Ein möglicher Grund für viele Menschen könnte sein, dass sie gern in einer perfekten Gemeinschaft wie der griechischen Polis leben würden, in der Aristoteles damals die "Nikomachische Ethik" schrieb. Doch es könnte sein, dass sie dabei einer Vorstellung von der Polis nachhängen, wie es sie in Wirklichkeit nie gegeben hat und auch gar nicht geben kann. Schließlich war die Polis eine Sklavenwirtschaft, Frauen hatten in ihr wenig Rechte. Ein weiteres Motiv für unsere Tendenz zur Moral könnte sein, dass es Menschen gibt, die gern in ihrem Leben "alles richtig" machen möchten. Solche Menschen halten sich gern an Regeln und sind oft Anhänger der Moralphilosophie Kants. Es könnte nur sein, dass auch sie sich täuschen und zwar deshalb, weil die moralischen Regeln wie alle Regeln die Tendenz haben, sich in ihrer Zahl zu vermehren, bis man die Arbeit sie einzuhalten nicht mehr bewältigen kann, ja sie nicht einmal mehr überblickt. Dann gibt unter uns Weltverbesserer. Besonders junge Menschen möchten häufig in einer besseren Welt leben. Solche Menschen werden gewöhnlich zu Vegetariern, sie engagieren sich in wohltätigen Organisationen und kämpfen politisch für die Rechte benachteiligter Gruppen. Wo, wenn nicht im Utilitarismus könnten Menschen mit dieser Motivationsstruktur eine Heimat finden? Ein zentrales Anliegen des Buches besteht darin zu zeigen, dass Organisationen viel besser moralisch sein können als Einzelmenschen. Sie sind besser in der Lage, wiederholte Handlungen mit gleichbleibender Qualität
