About the Book

The Moon of Innocence is a taut story of love, passion and death among the rural peasants of Catalonia in 1963. Generalissimo Francisco Franco, the last Fascist standing after World War II, was at the height of his power. Among his other acts of tyranny, he tried to abolish the Catalan language. It is against this backdrop that the young poet Cesar and Maria, the farm girl that he loves, try to find freedom in each other. Like The Sorrows of Young Werther or Romeo and Juliet, societal conventions pave the way for tragedy. The effects on romance of wheels powered by petroleum, the homogenization of culture, and desperation born of loneliness all play a part as this riveting and surprising story unfolds. A powerful tale of love, intrigue, and loss, The Moon of Innocence will stay with you long after you put it down.
About the Author: Uke Jackson is a playwright, novelist, broadcaster and musician. The Moon of Innocence is his second novel. His plays have been produced in different theaters in downtown Manhattan. In addition to the musical "Ukulele Land" his dramatic writing includes "Monster Time"; "The Secret Warhol Rituals"; and "Avenue Z Afternoon" which he adapted for a GM Mark of Excellence television production. His first play written as an adult, "Dristi Magic" a one act, was staged by the McCarter Theater Street Theater unit. Over the years, he contributed short stories, essays and articles to magazines and newspapers across America, including the Miami Herald Sunday Magazine, NY Daily News, Philadelphia Inquirer, Berkeley Barb, Smithsonian, Travel & Leisure, and others. For many years, his light verse was a frequent feature in the NY Times. During the 1980s he was a driving force behind several of the Plexus jazz art operas that were presented in Manhattan, Rome, Sardinia, and Dakar. He also directs and he provides confidential script consulting services. He founded the NY Uke Fest in 2006, as well as the NY Ukulele ensemble. His popular "Flaming Ukulele Radio Hour" was broadcast on public radio from 2001 thru 2006. His "River Tales" -- a radio storytelling series -- was heard on nearly 200 public radio stations and won a Parents Choice Award, as well as leading to him being named one of the Top 10 recording artists in the country, according to the American Library Association. Currently, in addition to his writing, he leads a quirky group of musicians -- Uke Jackson and the Ginseng Roots Band -- up and down the Delaware River Valley, playing anywhere from community bandstands to crossroads cafes to cosmopolitan cabarets, from farmers markets to festival main stages. Further info is always available on his web site www.ukejackson.com
