Depuis que je le connais, la présence des autres m'est devenue plus intolérable encore, leur conversation surtout ! Oh ! comme elle m'angoisse et comme elle m'exaspère, et leur attitude, et leur façon d'être !... Les gens de mon monde, mes tristes pareils, comme tout ce qui vient d'eux m'irrite et m'attriste et m'oppresse, leur vide et bruyant bavardage, leur perpétuelle et monstrueuse vanité, leur effarant et plus monstrueux égoïsme, leurs propos de club ! Le ressassage des opinions toutes faites et des jugements appris, le vomissement automatique des articles lus, le matin, dans les feuilles et qu'on reconnaît au passage, leur désespérant désert d'idées, et là-dessus l'éternel plat du jour des clichés trop connus sur les écuries de courses et les alcôves des filles... et les loges des petites femmes ! Les petites femmes... autre loque de langage, la sale usure de ce terme avachi !... O mes contemporains, mes chers contemporains... leur idiot contentement d'eux-mêmes, leur suffisance épanouie et grasse, le stupide étalage de leurs bonnes fortunes, les vingt-cinq et cinquante louis sonnant de leurs prouesses tarifées toujours aux mêmes chiffres, leurs gloussements de poules et leurs grognements de porcs, quand ils prononcent le nom de certaines femmes, l'obésité de leurs cerveaux, l'obscénité de leurs yeux et la veulerie de leur rire ! Beaux pantins d'amour en vérité, avec l'affaissement esquinté de leurs gestes et le démantibulé de leur chic (le chic, un mot hideux qui sied comme un gant neuf à leur allure, affalée, de croque-morts, épanouie, de Falstaff)... (...) Pourquoi Ethal a-t-il éveillé en moi ce déchaînement de haine !... Certes, cette horreur des hommes, cette abomination des mondains surtout, je les ai toujours eues en moi, mais comme assoupies et couvées sous la cendre, latentes... Mais depuis que je le vois, c'est comme un ferment qui s'aigrit et bouillonne, une fureur me soulève tout, comme un vin nouveau, un vin d'exécration et de haine; tout mon sang bout, toute ma chair me fait mal, mes nerfs s'exacerbent et mes doigts se crispent, des envies de meurtre traversent mon cerveau... Tuer, tuer quelqu'un, oh ! comme cela m'apaiserait, éteindrait ma fièvre... et je me sens des mains d'assassin. Si c'est là la guérison promise ! et pourtant la présence et la conversation de Claudius me sont un bien-être, sa présence me rassure et sa voix me calme... Depuis que je le vois, les figures d'ombre qui grimaçaient autour de moi sont moins distinctes, je n'ai plus l'obsession lancinante des masques, ... et le vertige des yeux verts, des glauques prunelles de l'Antinoüs s'est évanoui !... Les yeux, les yeux, je n'ai plus la folie des yeux, cet homme a enchanté mon mal; sa conversation est d'un tel charme, c'est un tel éveilleur d'idées, ses moindres phrases trouvent en moi de tels échos. Ce sont mes pensées, même les plus lointaines, les pas encore nées, celles que je ne soupçonnais pas, que sa parole évoque et fait naître. Ce mystérieux causeur me raconte à moi-même, donne un corps à mes rêves, il me parle tout haut, je m'éveille en lui comme dans un autre moi plus précis et plus subtil; ses entretiens m'accouchent de moi-même, ses gestes fixent mes visions, et je lui dois la lumière et la vie. Il a dissipé, écarté mes ténèbres; des spectres ne m'y menacent plus. Et pourtant cette haine atroce et cette fureur de meurtre qui grandissent !
