Préface du Traducteur La fortune littéraire de Robinson Crusoé a été si prodigieuse que le nom de l'auteur, aux yeux du public, a presque disparu sous sa gloire. Si Daniel de Foë avait eu la précaution de faire suivre sa signature du titre qu'il avait à la célébrité, la Peste de Londres, Roxana, le Colonel Jacques, le Capitaine Singleton et Moll Flanders auraient fait leur chemin dans le monde. Mais il n'en a pas été ainsi. Pareille aventure était arrivée à Cervantes, après avoir écrit Don Quichotte. Car on ne lut guère ses admirables nouvelles, son théâtre, sans compter Galathée et Persiles y Sigismunde. Cervantes et Daniel de Foë ne composèrent leurs grandes oeuvres qu'après avoir dépassé l'âge mûr. Tous deux avaient mené auparavant une vie très active: Cervantes, longtemps prisonnier, ayant vu les hommes et les choses, la guerre et la paix, mutilé d'une main. De Foë, prisonnier aussi à Newgate, exposé au pilori, mêlé au brassage des affaires politiques au milieu d'une révolution; l'un et l'autre harcelés par des ennuis d'argent, l'un par des dettes, l'autre par des faillites successives; l'un et l'autre énergiques, résistants, doués d'une extraordinaire force de travail. Et, ainsi que Don Quichotte contient l'histoire idéale de Cervantes transposée dans la fiction, Robinson Crusoé est l'histoire de Daniel de Foë au milieu des difficultés de la vie. C'est de Foë lui-même qui l'a déclaré dans la préface au troisième volume de Robinson: Sérieuses réflexions durant la vie et les surprenantes aventures de Robinson Crusoé. Ce roman, écrit de Foë, bien qu'allégorique est aussi historique. De plus, il existe un homme bien connu dont la vie et les actions forment le sujet de ce volume, et auquel presque toutes les parties de l'histoire font directement allusion. Ceci est la pure vérité... Il n'y a pas une circonstance de l'histoire imaginaire qui ne soit calquée sur l'histoire réelle... C'est l'exposition d'une scène entière de vie réelle durant vingt-huit années passées dans les circonstances les plus errantes, affligeantes et désolées que jamais homme ait traversées; et où j'ai vécu si longtemps d'une vie d'étranges merveilles, parmi de continuelles tempêtes; où je me suis battu avec la pire espèce de sauvages et de cannibales, en d'innombrables et surprenants incidents; où j'ai été nourri par des miracles plus grands que celui des corbeaux; où j'ai souffert toute manière de violences et d'oppressions, d'injures, de reproches, de mépris des humains, d'attaques de démons, de corrections du ciel et d'oppositions sur terre... Puis, traitant de la représentation fictive de l'emprisonnement forcé de Robinson dans son île, de Foë ajoute: Il est aussi raisonnable de représenter une espèce d'emprisonnement par une autre, que de représenter n'importe quelle chose qui existe réellement par une autre qui n'existe pas. Si j'avais adopté la façon ordinaire d'écrire l'histoire privée d'un homme, en vous exposant la conduite ou la vie que vous connaissiez, et sur les malheurs ou défaillances de laquelle vous aviez parfois injustement triomphé, tout ce que j'aurais dit ne vous aurait donné aucune diversion, aurait obtenu à peine l'honneur d'une lecture, ou mieux point d'attention.
