About the Book

English summary: Moksopaya, the path that leads to liberation, a Sanskrit text that originated in Kashmir in the 10th century AD, is a philosophical explanation of the world given to the king's son Rama by the wise man Vasi-ha during the course of a long conversation. The aim of this didactically structured teaching is a form of self-liberation from the painful cycle of existence, that doesn't mean having to withdraw from the world, but makes possible an actively purposeless life which, for those "already liberated during their own lifetime" (jivanmukta), is free of suffering in this world. In the text philosophical passages are interspersed with elaborately narrated stories that are meant to illustrate particular philosophical statements. Presented in the "book on achieving a state of peace" is an annotated philological translation of the 4299 verses of the fifth book of the Moksopaya, which follows the text of the complete historical-critical edition. It contains nine stories, including an original version of famous Prahlada legend which supports the philosophy espoused in the Moksopaya. There is also more detailed discussion of meditation techniques than in previous books. Particularly appealing from a literary point of view is also the story of the ascetic Gadhi, who asks Visnu to be allowed to experience a manifestation of his "power of illusion" (maya) and thereupon goes on to experience fantastic states of consciousness, which are subsequently confirmed in the "real "world.
