Zineb n'était pas très belle, du moins les copines de Halti le murmuraient dans son dos. Moi je la trouvais jolie. Je l'appelais Zouina en secret. Il ne fallait surtout pas que Halti l'entende, elle se serait fâchée. Elle voulait qu'on l'appelle Zineb parce que c'était le nom que lui avaient donné ses parents à la naissance, alors on devait le respecter. Je ne comprenais pas pourquoi je ne pouvais pas dire Zouina mais je l'acceptais. Alors je l'appelais Zouineb. Halti ne l'a jamais remarqué. Elle était la poupée dont j'avais tant rêvé. Je lui parlais doucement en berbère, je lui racontais les histoires du Bled* quand je gardais les moutons de mon père. Elle me faisait tout le temps des sourires, des gazouillis, bavait sur ma robe, mais ce n'était pas grave, c'était moi qui lavais mes affaires, avec celles de toute la famille. J'avais beaucoup de chance, ma tante avait acheté une machine à laver, comme en France disait-elle, car je n'y arrivais plus. C'était beaucoup moins fatiguant ainsi. Zineb est un bébé de quelques mois, une nièce que Halti et son mari sans enfant, adoptent. Et Mina est une autre nièce, d'un autre frère de Halti, venue de son bled près d'Essaouira pour être petite bonne, halti étant trop occupée par sa petite vie mondaine, dans le douar où ils sont revenus prendre leur retraite, pour éduquer seule le bébé. Elle est comme la sultane qui reçoit ses sujets en permanence, autour d'un verre de thé et de petits gateaux, ayant relégué son mari, le Hajj, dans le garage transformé en petite épicerie. Le Hajj est un sage, un érudit du livre saint et on pourrait presque dire un futur Marabout . La vie est exubérante dans ce douar où la plupart des petites filles et des petits garçons vont à l'école. Mina est heureuse dans cette maison où elle trime du matin au soir. La jalousie et la bêtise humaine auront raison de ce fragile équilibre.

Après des études secondaires chez les Jésuites où il y côtoie des élèves marocains, il se lie d'amitié avec beaucoup d'entre eux, il apprend l'arabe. Après des études d'ingénieur, il se lance dans les Affaires dont certaines le ramèneront au Maroc. Il y conserve encore de nombreux amis.
