Kinder stellen viele Fragen, und nicht selten sind diese aus dem naturwissenschaftlichen Bereich. Warum ist der Himmel blau? Warum schwebt ein Heissluftballon? Warum leuchtet eine Lampe sofort, wenn man auf den Lichtschalter druckt? Der Alltag von Kindern ist von naturwissenschaftlichen Phanomenen gepragt, die Kinder zum Staunen oder Nachfragen bringen. Um solche Fragen auch beantworten zu konnen, ist bereits im Grundschulalter eine naturwissenschaftliche Grundbildung notig. Der Einsatz von Modellen stellt hier ein zentrales Hilfsmittel dar, um Kindern komplexe Phanomene des Alltags verstandlicher zu machen und ihnen naturwissenschaftliche Arbeitsweisen naherzubringen, die sie beim Erschliessen der Umwelt unterstutzen. Im Sinne der aktuellen Kompetenzorientierung wird dabei weniger fokussiert, dass Modelle eingesetzt werden, sondern dass Schuler/innen in der Lage sind, Modelle tatsachlich gewinnbringend fur ihre Lernprozess zu nutzen. Der dafur erforderlichen Modellkompetenz kommt hinsichtlich des Beitrags zur naturwissenschaftlichen Bildung eine hohe Bedeutung zu. Empirische Grundlagen fur eine differenzierte Diagnose und Forderung von Modellkompetenz standen jedoch fur die Primarstufe bislang noch aus. In der vorliegenden Interventionsstudie wird daher die Evaluation und Entwicklung von Modellkompetenz bei Grundschulkindern in den Fokus gestellt. Es wird ein Kompetenzmodell entwickelt sowie evaluiert und darauf aufbauend untersucht, uber welche Modellkompetenz Grundschuler/innen verfugen bzw. inwiefern sich eine Weiterentwicklung von Modellkompetenz im naturwissenschaftlichen Sachunterricht unterstutzen lasst. Die Studie stellt heraus, dass eine Forderung von Modellkompetenz sowohl notwendig als auch erfolgversprechend ist. Fur einen gewinnbringenden Einsatz von Modellen erweist sich insbesondere die Kombination eines bewussten Lernens mit Modellen und uber Modelle als entscheidend.
