Im zeitlichen Maßstab existieren schriftliche Quellen im Vergleich dazu erst seit einem "Wimpernschlag". Dagegen haben unsere Vorfahren Millionen Jahre nur materielle Zeugnisse hinterlassen. Im Schulcurriculum spielt die Zeit vor der schriftlichen Geschichte jedoch meist nur eine untergeordnete Rolle. Durch den chronologischen Aufbau der Lehrpläne fällt die Thematisierung der ur- und frühgeschichtlichen Epochen in die Anfangsphase des Fachunterrichts Geschichte. Nach einer kurzen Einführung werden dann meist schon im ersten Jahr die Altsteinzeit, die neolithische Revolution und die frühen Hochkulturen im Mittelmeerraum abgehandelt. Vertiefende Ansätze werden häufig ins Museum "ausgelagert". Dabei bieten archäologische Erkenntnisse einen spannenden und "greifbaren" Ansatz für die Entwicklung von historischem Denken im schulischen Alltag. Die, durch die Quellenlage bedingte Reduzierung auf grundlegende Daseinsfunktionen und die konkrete Dinglichkeit der Archäologie ermöglichen einen kindgerechten Zugang zur Geschichte. Die Sachquellen fordern Fragen heraus, die sich besonders für die Methode des entdeckenden Lernens eignen. Die Interdisziplinarität der archäologischen Wissenschaft knüpft sehr gut an den Ansatz des Sachunterrichtes an. Mit einer Streckung der Rahmenlehrpläne zugunsten archäologischer Themen könnte eine stark vernachlässigte Epoche vertiefend behandelt werden. Die mitteleuropäische Bronzezeit bildet ein Brückenglied zwischen der Steinzeit und der Antike. Die Entwicklungslinie der Menschheitsgeschichte erhält durch sie wichtige Punkte des technischen und sozialen Wandels.
