Der vorliegende Band bietet neue Forschungsergebnisse zu mitteldeutschen Bildhauern dieser Zeit, ihren Werkstatten und ihrem geographischer Wirkungsradius. Die ausserordentlich reich illustrierte Studie widmet sich dem Zeitraum von etwa 1560 bis 1640 in einem Gebiet, das sich von Westthuringen uber das nordliche Harzvorland bis in den Raum Leipzig erstreckt. Den Ausgangspunkt bildet dabei die Beschaftigung mit sieben Meistern, deren OEuvre durch die Untersuchung ihrer Kunstwerke rekonstruiert wird. Zu den bedeutendsten Vertretern der Floris-Renaissance in Deutschland zahlt durch seine herzoglichen Epitaphien der Gothaer Bildhauer Sebastian Gromann. Als wichtige Werkstatthaupter treten die in landlichen Orten ansassigen Meister Zacharias Bogenkrantz und Moritz Becke hervor. Der "Meister von Burgscheidungen", Christoffel Weber, und die Werke in der Region an der Unstrut schlagen geographisch die Brucke zu der Leipziger Bildhauerei um 1600, die mit Heinrich Hunefeld, Levin Tydeche, Valentin Silbermann und Franz Julius Doteber eine der wichtigsten deutschen Bildhauerschulen der Epoche darstellte.
