Barbarossa und die Epoche der frühen Staufer, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Geschichte vermittelt die bildende Kunst ihrem Betrachter selten als "lux veritatis", also als "unverfälscht Wiedergegebenes" aus vergangener Zeit. Gemäß der unausgesprochenen Frage "Welche Vergangenheit braucht deine Zukunft?", schafft sie mit Geschichtsbildern eine Vergangenheit, die nicht den Abbildungen des Historischen, sondern denen der Zukunftserwartungen entspricht. Der Anspruch an das Gewesene kann dabei von ästhetischem, religiösem oder politischem Interesse sein. Er kann der Legitimation oder zur Identitätsstiftung dienen. Auch die Herrscherpersönlichkeit Kaiser Friederich I. Barbarossa erfüllte jene Funktion als visualisierter Träger der Historie. Als Symbolfigur in Politik, Geschichte, Literatur und Kunst, steht er als Bild für die nationalen Sehnsüchte der Deutschen. Im 19. Jahrhundert stellte er als einer ihrer Heroen eine leitende Orientierungsgröße in deren Zeitgeschehen dar. Sein Mythos strukturierte die Vergangenheit und hat noch Jahrhunderte danach Einfluss auf die Gegenwart. Innerhalb der Erinnerungskultur ist Barbarossa bis heute in Malerei, Bildhauerei, Denkmälern, Denkmalprojekten, Festen und lebenden Bildern ein Denkmal gesetzt. Das Gedächtnis an den Kaiser hält sich in dieser Hinsicht lebendig. Fragestellung und Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, vor dem mythologischen Hintergrund des Friedrich Barbarossa sein Nachleben in der Erinnerungskultur des Genres der bildenden Kunst zu betrachten. Anhand dreier großer Projekte für Mittelalterzyklen um 1800 und im Speziellen an den Darstellungen seines Todes, soll herausgearbeitet werden, wie und weshalb er Thema der Historienmalerei des 19.
