El presente volumen recoge los debates realizados a lo largo de dos años en el foro IberoIdeas. El mismo se creó en el año 2006 como resultado de una iniciativa surgida en el Congreso anual de la History of Social and Political Concepts Group realizado en Rio de Janeiro, sirviendo desde entonces como órgano de expresión, intercambio de ideas y difusión de su sección Iberoamericana. Para su realización se contó con el auspicio de El Colegio de México, La Universidad del País Vasco, la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Rio de Janeiro y la Universidad Nacional de Quilmes, de Argentina. Dicho foro cuenta actualmente con más de trescientos miembros de América Latina, Europa y Estados Unidos. La propuesta original para este primer debate en el foro fue poner en discusión la idea de la existencia de una "cultura política latinoamericana". Para ello reunimos una serie de textos recientes que consideramos fundamentales al respecto y propusimos a sus autores que los sometan a debate en el mencionado foro. Se trata, en general, de versiones condensadas de textos mayores publicados o presentados en distintos ámbitos académicos, pero que su sola reunión entendimos que servía para ofrecer una perspectiva mucho más rica y plural de una problemática común. Y, por otro lado, su posterior debate y contraste con especialistas y estudiantes de diversas procedencias disciplinares, geográficas e institucionales permitiría, a su vez, aclarar y desarrollar, o eventualmente cuestionar, los argumentos y líneas interpretativas que allí se presentan. Estamos convencidos, en fin, de que se trata de un debate imprescindible, ya que en él se convierten en objeto de escrutinio crítico algunos de los supuestos fundamentales sobre los que se fundan aún hoy las perspectivas historiográficas acerca la historia política latinoamericana.

Elías José Palti es doctor en historia de la Universidad de California en Berkeley. Realizó estudios postdoctorales en El Colegio de México y la Universidad de Harvard.
