About the Book

English summary: The 30th volume of the "Jahrbuch fur Biblische Theologie" is an anniversary volume. For 30 years, JBTh has addressed academic, practicioning and teaching theologians with highly interesting topics, enabling them to participate in the research process. In the current situation, rife with controversies, it seeks to contribute to dialogue and orientation, all in ecumenical dialogue. Volume 30 focuses on pity and compassion, because compassion seems to be a fundamental Christian virtue. But it is under scrutiny: Is compassion really what the sufferer needs? Should it not rather be respect? And looking at the Christian rationale, is the appropriate reaction to the suffering Christ really compassion, and not active following? In keeping with the concept of the yearbook, this collection starts with the biblical foundations. The central texts dealt with are Gen 6:7, Ex 34:6, the Book of Jonah, the synoptic tradition and Rom 9-11, but other monotheistic religions are also included. Church historical contributions from the field of patristics and the concept of compassio are represented, as well as current discussions in dogmatic, ethical, and practical-theological questions.
