About the Book

Am 7. Juli 1985 trug sich ein erst 17-jähriger "Rotschopf" in die Tennis-Geschichtsbücher ein. Bis heute gilt Boris Becker als jüngster und erster ungesetzter Wimbledonsieger aller Zeiten. Schon während des 1985 laufenden Wimbledon-Turniers stiegen die Einschaltquoten im deutschen Fernsehen mit jeder Runde stark an. Im Jahre 1987 gewann das deutsche Damentennis dann ebenfalls einen Weltstar namens Steffi Graf hinzu. Mit dem Sieg der French Open in Paris schaffte sie ihren endgültigen Durchbruch. Die zweite Hälfte der 1980er-Jahre steht somit für die Blütezeit des deutschen Tennissports. Auch die Davis-Cup-Mannschaften und weitere Tennisspieler/-innen profitierten von diesen Weltstars und wuchsen über sich hinaus. In dieser Zeit verfolgten mehrere Millionen Zuschauer die Spiele von Boris Becker, Steffi Graf und Michael Stich im TV. Hunderttausende kleideten sich mit der entsprechenden Tennisausrüstung aus den Sportfachgeschäften ein und die Mitgliederzahl des DTB stieg in den 90er-Jahren sogar auf 2,3 Millionen. Ebenso wurden deutschlandweit viele neue Spielstätten mit Hilfe von Fördermitteln errichtet, die durch die Kommunen für die Vereine und Mitglieder zur Verfügung gestellt wurden. Von 1995 bis 2012 sanken die Mitgliedszahlen allerdings kontinuierlich und lagen 2012 nur noch bei ca. 1,5 Mio. Mitgliedern. Der Deutsche Tennisbund hat diesen negativen Trend erkannt und versucht durch gezielte Maßnahmen und Aktionen, in Zusammenarbeit mit den Landesverbänden und Vereinen, neue Mitglieder für den Tennissport zu begeistern.
