In der heutigen Zeit sind Mitarbeiter eines der wichtigsten "Güter", wenn nicht sogar das Wichtigste in einem Unternehmen. Auch zu Zeiten der Industrie 4.0, in der die Maschinen zum Teil ganze Fertigungsabläufe ohne menschliche Unterstützung herstellen, können ohne die Mitarbeiter keine neuen Produkte in der Entwicklung designed werden, Kunden am Telefon beraten oder Abrechnungen in der Buchhaltung getätigt werden. Ein Unternehmen braucht zudem nicht einfach Mitarbeiter, sondern es benötigt zufriedene Mitarbeiter. Mit der Zeit hat sich aufgrund des Verhaltens der Mitarbeiter untereinander oder zwischen den Hierarchieebenen, sowie der Branche, in der das jeweilige Unternehmen tätig ist, ein gewisser Charakter des Unternehmens entwickelt. Dieser Charakter wird auch geprägt durch die Gründer des Unternehmens, die Produkte, die es herstellt und/oder vertreibt, die ethischen und moralischen Grundzüge, die es vertritt, so wie auch durch äußerliche Einflüsse. Dieser Charakter kann auch als Unternehmenskultur betitelt werden. Zwei weitere große Themen, welche zunehmend an starker Bedeutung gewinnen, sind die Themen Nachhaltigkeit und Umwelt. Nicht zuletzt durch den Klimawandel, das Schmelzen der Polkappen und eine Veränderung der Jahreszeiten, wird dieses immer häufiger auch in der Öffentlichkeit zur Sprache gebracht. Aber auch die Unternehmen befassen sich zunehmend mit diesem Thema und einem nachhaltigeren Verbrauch von Ressourcen.
