Dazu werden zunächst elementare Begriffe aus dem Bereich Motivation erläutert, die für das weitere Verständnis ausschlaggebend sind. Anschließend werden ausgewählte Motivationstheorien sowie Möglichkeiten zur Motivation der Mitarbeiter in der betrieblichen Praxis vorgestellt. Das anschließende Praxisbeispiel beschreibt die oben erwähnte Problemsituation und untermauert mögliche Lösungsansätze. Engagierte Mitarbeiter bringen mehr Leistung und sind damit ein wichtiger Erfolgsfaktor im Unternehmen. Das bestätigen zahlreiche Studien, allen voran der Gallup Engagement Index, der alljährlich die emotionale Verbundenheit von Mitarbeitern zu ihrem Unternehmen untersucht und diese mit der Produktivität in Verbindung stellt. Die Ergebnisse sind immer wieder erschreckend, rund 70 Prozent der Beschäftigten erledigen nur noch Dienst nach Vorschrift. Doch was bedeutet das für Unternehmen? Die Mitarbeiterzufriedenheit ist die treibende Kraft, also der Motivator für die produktive Arbeit der Mitarbeiter. Nur motivierte und engagierte Mitarbeiter sind bereit beste Arbeitsleistungen zu erbringen und sind somit ein wichtiger Faktor für den langfristigen Unternehmenserfolg, sowie die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit der Unternehmen. Aus diesem Grund sollte die Führungsriege der Unternehmen die Voraussetzungen für eine motivierte Belegschaft kennen und die Rahmenbedingungen dafür schaffen sowie Motivationsdefizite abbauen. Dies ist laut dem Gallup Engagement Index 2016 leider bisher selten der Fall.
