Das Thema Mitarbeiterbindung und Mitarbeitermotivation von Mitarbeitern in der Pflege wird aufgrund des bestehenden Fachkräftemangels immer bedeutender. Der Berufszweig der Altenpflege ist schon heute deutschlandweit vom Fachkräftemangel betroffen. Anhand der Statistik der Bundesagentur für Arbeit zeigt sich, dass alle Bundesländer im Schnitt einen Gesamtwert von 2,8 Punkten erreichen. Ab einem Punktwert von zwei wird bei der Arbeitsagentur für Arbeit bereits von einem "Engpassberuf" gesprochen, der Höchstwert ist drei. Nicht alle Bundesländer schneiden gleich ab; so zeigt zum Beispiel Thüringen "nur" einen Wert von 2,0. Damit führt die Berufsuntergruppe Altenpflege die Top 20 der Engpassberufe auf dem Anforderungsniveau der Fachkräfte an. Als Gründe für den Engpass stehen die Alterung der Gesellschaft und damit die steigende Nachfrage von Pflegedienstleistungen im Vordergrund. Auch die aktuelle Corona-Pandemie trägt zu einem hohen Bedarf bei. Gemäß einer Studie zum Thema Arbeitsumfeld und Unternehmenskultur zeigt sich, dass die emotionale Bindung essenziell entscheidend für den wirtschaftlichen Erfolg des Unternehmens ist. Die Wechselbereitschaft der Arbeitnehmer hat in den vergangenen Jahren aber prozentual zugenommen, nur noch sechs von zehn Arbeitnehmer sagen, dass sie sich selbst in einem Jahr ohne Wenn und Aber noch bei ihrem Arbeitgeber sehen. Mitarbeiter mit einer hohen Bindung zum Unternehmen weisen prozentual weniger Fehltage pro Jahr auf. Die Mitarbeiterbindung an das Unternehmen wird aufgrund des demografischen Wandels ein immer wichtigeres Thema für Unternehmen in der Gesundheits- und Pflegebranche.
