Der Wert der Mitarbeiter wird in dieser Arbeit durch den Autor als Humankapital bezeichnet, hierbei wird jedoch nicht der individuelle Wert der Mitarbeiter als Menschen betrachtet, sondern der Wert bzw. der Nutzen der Mitarbeiter für das Unternehmen. Auch erfolgt die Betrachtung aus der betriebswirtschaftlichen und nicht aus der volkswirtschaftlichen Perspektive, in der das Humankapital einer Volkswirtschaft bestimmt werden müsste. Ziel ist somit die Quantifizierung des Wertes bzw. Nutzens, den die Mitarbeiter für ein Unternehmen darstellen. Hierzu führt der Autor dieser Arbeit in Kapitel 1.2 in die Thematik ein und liefert in Kapitel 2 eine genauere Beschreibung des Begriffs Humankapital und die damit verbundenen unterschiedlichen Betrachtungsweisen. Eine Definition des Begriffes Humankapital erfolgt nicht, da die Verständnisbandbreite in der Literatur zu breit gefächert, zu diffus und zu uneinheitlich ist und die Entwicklung einer Definition nicht dem Zweck dieser Arbeit dient. Anschließend werden in Kapitel 3 die Herausforderungen aufgezeigt, die sowohl aus der Wirtschaft als auch aus der Wissenschaft an ein System zur Ermittlung von Humankapital gestellt werden. Hiernach präsentiert der Autor drei Systematiken zur Bestimmung von Humankapital und setzt sich mit diesen kritisch auseinander. Aus den in Kapitel 3 gewonnen Erkenntnissen formuliert der Autor dieser Arbeit in Kapitel 4 die grundlegenden Problematiken bei der Bestimmung des Humankapitals.
