Excerpt from Mistrals "Nerto" Literar-Historische Studie

Zugeeignet"nerto' ist der Zeitfolge nad1 Mistrals dritte erz�hlende Dichtung. Beendet im Jahre 1883, und 1884 als Einzelwerk ersdrienen, erhielt sie nod1 in demselben Jahre den Preis der Akademie. Abgefasst in Achtsilbnern, besteht sie aus einem Prolog, sieben Ges�ngen und einem Epilog. Im Prolog k�ndigt der Dichter an, dass der Teufel in seiner Erz�hlung eine Rolle spielen werde, derselbe Teufel, an den so viele nicht glaubten, der aber doch existiere und den Menschen Schaden bereite. Allerdings wird der Teufel schliesslich mit Gottes Hilfe besiegt. Darauf folgt die Erz�hlung: Der Baron Pons aus ch�teau-renard hat bei einem Gelage sein ganzes Verm�gen im Spiel verloren und hat, aus Furcht vor der ihm drohenden Armut, seine Tod1ter Netto dem Teufel verkauft mit der Bedingung, sie nach 13 Jahren dem B�sen auszuliefern. So ist der Reid1tum beim Baron wieder eingekehrt, aber gleichzeitig haben sich auch die Gewissens bisse eingestellt. Um ihnen zu entgehen, ergibt er sich einem unruhigen Kriegerleben. In einer Schlacht verwundet, gesteht er seiner Tochter auf dem Sterbelager die furchtbare S�nde und macht sie willig, unverz�glich, da die 13 Jahre bald abgelaufen sind, zu dem in Avignon belagerten Papste zu gehen, ihn um S�ndenvergebung zu bitten und ihm zugleidm den Weg anzu geben, wie er durch einen unterirdischen Gang aus Avignon fliehen und sid1 nach ch�teau-renard retten k�nne. Nerto eilt in h�chster Erregung auf dem unterirdischen Gange zum Papste. Im Lager der Belagerten angelangt, wird sie zum Peldhaupt mann Rodrigo gef�hrt. Dieser, ein leidenschaftlicher Mann, der manche Bluttat auf dem Gewissen hat und, wie sich sp�ter herausstellt, sogar mit dem Teufel eine Verbindung eingegangen ist, entbrennt in heisser Liebe f�r Nerto, deren wunderbare Sch�nheit auf ihn tiefen Eindruck gemacht hat. Nerto erz�hlt ihm ihr Leid, und er versichert ihr, dass es f�r sie nur in der Liebe Rettung gebe. Darauf singt er in hohen T�nen der.
