"No espaço de um único mês, mataram, no arraial, a menina Das Dores, que morava na invasão perto do córrego, o vigia do condomínio fechado e o casal de operários que trabalhava na mineração, mas isso era coisa que os homens fingiam ignorar, preferindo dizer que São Sebastião, enfim, acordava para o progresso, trazido pela presença de gringos e indústrias e consumado pela existência corriqueira de crimes hediondos, daqueles que só acontecem onde a honra e a decência, existentes no coração dos homens, cedem lugar ao dinheiro e à posse."

A morte súbita do fazendeiro mais influente da vila, o Coronel Salazar, que sofre um infarto fulminante ao ser atacado por um dos seus cães, e a presença do suspeito dos crimes no casarão em que o corpo do Coronel está sendo velado desencadeiam uma revolta entre os moradores, culminando num grande incêndio e numa perseguição frenética pelas ruas da cidade.

Religiosidade, tabus comportamentais e os impactos socioeconômicos da mineração perpassam a trama ricamente construída pelo autor, composta por personagens fictícios que povoam cenários idílicos e reais de São Sebastião das Águas Claras, distrito de Nova Lima.

O autor

José Roberto Moreira de Melo é mineiro de Araçuaí, onde nasceu e passou a infância. Reside em Belo Horizonte (MG), é advogado tributarista e servidor aposentado da Receita Federal. Iniciou sua trajetória como escritor em 1989, aos 43 anos. Venceu o Concurso Nacional de Literatura Cidade de Belo Horizonte, em 1990, com o romance "O mistério de São Sebastião". Também publicou o romance "A Lei de Gerson", a novela policial "Armação em Búzios" e as coletâneas de contos "Mansão Hollywood", "Memórias execráveis" e "Tempos de enfado". É autor, ainda, dos romances e novelas da coleção "Jequitinhonha, a terra, a gente", nos quais a criação ficcional é entrelaçada a fatos históricos, lendas e personagens folclóricos do Vale do Jequitinhonha. Prevista para ter dez obras, a série já tem seis títulos publicados: "Contos do Vale", "O último trem para Filadélfia", "O Rio das Araras Grandes", "Nanuque, o herói do Mucuri, "A virgem de Gravatá", e o mais recente, lançado neste ano de 2023, "O Bicho de Pedra Azul".
