Kirkus Reviews Featured Indie Book. It's a scorching hot day, the kind of day that grows warmer when the gusts come. Lanna Zar is learning to swim at the town pool where she befriends Sam. Meanwhile, her father is flirting with Sam's mother, a redhead whose meticulous makeup paints a Monet-like image. Soon after, Sam finds his parents dead.
Set against the hypnotic backdrop of the New York City skyline, amidst the fantastical luxuries of the ultra-wealthy, and juxtaposed by the natural wonder that is Mother Earth, MISSWIRED follows the interwoven trials and tribulations of Lanna and Sam, two acquaintances whose burgeoning friendship comes to a startling halt.
Through a captivating story and poetic prose, MISSWIRED explores the depths of our givers and the mystical elements that influence us. Who killed Sam's parents, and what becomes of Lanna and Sam twenty years later?
Editorial Reviews:
"Makhmali's smart debut has a unique style and structure that is held together by vivid characterization ... the emotions play out wonderfully." - Kirkus Reviews
"If you believe that the universe helps us when we realize that we've been (as Makhmali's pun intends) "misswired" and are open to connectivity again, then this novel is your spiritual cup of tea and then some." - The Jersey Journal
"We absolutely love this book!" - Fuzzable
Excerpt from MISSWIRED:
"To say that I remember the details of that day perfectly would be a lie. And I have never been much of a liar. But, then again, what is the relevance of truth to a child who has lost his or her giver?"
