Las páginas de este libro relatan mi paso por nuestro mundo desde cerca de la mitad del siglo pasado a las primeras décadas del presente, desde mis primeros años en Huánuco, una pequeña ciudad de provincia, a cuando escribo estas líneas en Lima y Key Biscayne en la segunda década del siglo XXI. Mi vida ha sido guiada por los valores de trabajo, honestidad y servicio que me enseñaron mis padres y algunos admirados maestros. Espero que este relato pueda inspirar y llegar al corazón de mis lectores. El mundo cambia y cada vez más rápidamente como nos predecía Alvin Toffler. Durante mi ya larga vida, he sido testigo de avances maravillosos, de progresos increíbles y también de grandes tragedias y guerras muy destructivas que no han hecho más que agravar los problemas que pretendían resolver. En mi narración he incluido muchos de los grandes cambios políticos y sociales que me ha tocado vivir, sin este contexto sería muy difícil entender los acontecimientos a los que hago referencia. Hoy se ciernen sobre el futuro, principalmente por acción humana, negros nubarrones que amenazan la vida en nuestro planeta, de los que quiero dar también cuenta desde mi perspectiva. Después de una infancia feliz y una educación provinciana, decidí estudiar medicina. Como médico, docente e investigador he trabajado para contribuir al avance del conocimiento, a la salud y al bienestar de las personas. Asimismo he colaborado en la solución de los problemas sociales y demográficos del Perú y de los países en los que he vivido. Estas páginas dan cuenta de estos afanes. Las he titulado ]Mis cuatro vidas, memorias de un médico en dos mundos] porque, por mi deseo de obtener una excelente educación y por losgrandes cambios que me ha tocado vivir, he trabajado en Perú, Colombia y México, países en vías de desarrollo, y en el primer mundo, en Estados Unidos. En todos estos lugares he tenido excelentes profesores, grandes amigos y maravillosas experiencias de las que quiero también dar fe. Las convulsiones políticas de las últimas décadas de la vida peruana me llevaron finalmente a migrar y regresar a trabajar y vivir en Estados Unidos, mi segunda patria...******Dr. Luis A. Sobrevilla AlcázarLuis A. Sobrevilla Alcázar (1934, Huancayo, Perú), es Médico Cirujano por la UNMSM y Doctor en Medicina por la UPCH. Realizó estudios de posgrado en los hospitales de las universidades de Boston y Harvard y en el Mount Sinai Hospital de NY de 1959 a 1964. Al retornar al Perú, el autor trabajó como investigador del Instituto de Investigaciones de la Altura y Profesor de Medicina y Director del Instituto de Estudios de Población de la Universidad Cayetano Heredia. En 1973 fue contratado por el Population Council como asesor médico de los programas de Población y Planificación Familiar de Colombia y México. En 1980, fue nombrado Director General de Atención Materno Infantil y Población del Ministerio de Salud del Perú y organizó el primer programa público nacional de planificación familiar. En 1983 asumió el cargo de Director técnico del Consejo Nacional de Población. Ha ejercido como médico internista y endocrinólogo en Lima, Bogotá y Miami.
