Foi um dos mais importantes e influentes historiadores e filósofo das religiões da contemporaneidade.Embora o seu trabalho académico nunca tenha estado subordinado às suas crenças políticas, este reflecte a escola de pensamento associada à Roménia do entre-guerras, bem como das obras de Julius Evola, tendo ligações temáticas comuns às do fascismo. O académico Marcel Tolcea tem defendido que, por intermédio da interpretação que Evola fez das obras de Guénon, Eliade manteve uma ligação notável às ideologias nacionalistas e que este transparece nas suas obras.Um artigo, datado dos anos 30, via Eliade retractar Julius Evola como sendo um grande intelectual e elogiar intelectuais tão polémicos como Oswald Spengler, Arthur de Gobineau, Houston Stewart Chamberlain e inclusive Alfred Rosenberg, ideólogo nazi. Evola, que continuou a defender os princípios do fascismo místico, na sua interpretação de Direita, chegou a protestar que Eliade pecava por não o citar a ele nem a Guénon. Eliade respondeu-lhe que os seus trabalhos se destinavam a um público mais amplo, que não os iniciados dos círculos esotéricos. No final dos anos 60 Eliade, bem como Evola e Rougier, entre outros intelectuais, deram o seu apoio ao GRECE - Groupement de Recherche et d'Études pour la Civilisation Européenne, parte da corrente intelectual que ficou conhecida pelo nome de Nova Direita.ACERCA DO AUTORClaudio Mutti (nascido em 1946) formado em filologia clássica, traduziu para o italiano obras de Plutarco, Aratos, Porfírio, do Imperador Juliano e de Salústio. Depois de ter desenvolvido actividade docente e de pesquisa no Instituto de Filologia Fino-Úgrico de Língua e Literatura Húngara da Universidade de Bolonha, cargo a que teve que renunciar em 1974.Mutti escreveu diversas obras relativas ao folclore da Europa central, estudando o conteúdo simbólico das tradições populares seguindo os passos das indicações fornecidas por René Guénon. No âmbito de um aprofundado interesse pela cultura da área carpático-danubiana, traduziu numerosos documentos e depoimentos relativos ao movimento legionário romeno e ao movimento das cruzes flechadas húngaro. Em particular, investigou as relações de Mircea Eliade, Emil Cioran e Constantin Noica com o Movimento Legionário; fez pesquisas aprofundadas acerca da influência exercida por René Guénon e Julius Evola nos países da Europa danubiana.
