About the Book

Miramar is the gorgeous castle of Trieste, Italy, along the bank of the river. Inside lives happily Massimiliano d?Asburgo, brother of Francesco Giuseppe, imperator of Austria. Massimiliano doesnt say that a sad destiny is waiting for him. He will have to leave his lovely castle to go to Mexico because he accepted the crown of imperator forced by Napoleone III and the Mexican Conservatives. They destabilized the system of Benito Juarez because he was contrary to their business. Also, his wife, Carlotta, forced Massimiliano because shes very ambitious. Shes also envious of her sister-in-law Elisabetta of Baviera (?Sissi?). Carlotta wants to disclose that she will be empress of a state ten times bigger than Austria. Ramon GutiErrez lives peacefully with his wife, Nanline, in the splendid villa La Luz, saved by the frenzy of indios, explained in the previous novel Quetzal. It was called to Massimilianos court, and it will be the confidant. It doesnt suspect that he will begin a terrible adventure in the middle of the plots, schemes, and murders. Who has hatched a plot against him? Nanline doesnt have news about him. She tries to join him in Mexico City. Her beauty conquers Massimiliano and attracts his wife, Carlotta. Nanline accompanies Carlotta in an archaeological trip in the north of the town. There, the two women meet a strange group of indios. This meeting will change, in an unimaginable way, Carlottas life. In the meantime, Massimiliano, on a holiday to Cuernavaca, falls in love with Conchita, the daughter of his gardener. The political situation worsens. Juarez earns terrain and wins a lot of battles. Napoleone III decides to pull back the French troops in Mexico for Massimilianos protection. If it will do, Massimiliano will not escape. Carlotta is forced to go to Europe with Nanline, who becomes her best friend, to convince Napoleone not to withdraw the troops. Both women dont have an idea what will happen. They will be disappointed by the imperator and the pope. They will suffer a lot of humiliation and vexation. Then Carlottas mental health will be damaged permanently. In the meantime, at Mexico City, Ramon, victim of a Conservative conspiracy, is arrested for betrayal. The French troops begin to retreat aboard Veracruz. In the city, a cholera epidemic explodes. Nanline, unaware of everything, after long hard knocks and hazards, comes out in Mexico. But she doesnt remotely suspect whats going to happen. A big novel of adventure and love and full of suspense that has to background one of the most dramatic historical events of all time.
