About the Book

Die adelige Abtissin Hildegard von Bingen (1098 bis 1179) darf wohl als beruhmteste Frau des hohen Mittelalters bezeichnet werden. In ihren Werken fasziniert sie gleichermassen als visionare Mystikerin wie auch als Naturheilkundige und Musikerin. Unter den zahlreichen schriftlichen Zeugnissen ist der "Liber scivias" ("Wisse die Wege"), der ihre Visionen enthalt, eines der bedeutendsten. Der Text ist in wenigen Kodizes uberliefert, zu denen die etwa 800 Jahre alte, mit 35 schon damals sehr ungewohnlichen Miniaturen ausgestattete Rupertsberger Prachthandschrift gehort. Das vor oder kurz nach dem Tod Hildegards im Rupertsberger Konvent bei Bingen entstandene Original ist seit 1945 verschollen, ist aber in einer kurz zuvor von Hand gefertigten, vorzuglichen Kopie, die heute in der Abtei St. Hildegard, Eibingen bei Rudesheim aufbewahrt wird, uberliefert. Bei den Illustrationen zum "Liber scivias" handelt es sich um fast zeitgenossische bildliche Umsetzungen von Hildegards Schilderungen ihrer mystischen Erfahrungen. Die mit kostbaren Materialien, mit Gold, Silber und sogar Bronze versehenen Miniaturen sind bis ins kleinste Detail geplante, nahezu Wort fur Wort ubersetzende Verbildlichungen der Visionen und der aus ihnen gewonnenen Belehrungen. Sie behandeln also nicht einfache und vertraute Themen, sondern es werden konventionelle Bildformen in nie gesehene Zusammenhange gebracht, und es entsteht dabei - ahnlich wie im Text Hildegards - aus eigenwilligen Metaphern eine neue Bilderwelt. In 35 ausfuhrlichen Beschreibungen werden die einzelnen Miniaturen anhand der Visionstexte und der Kommentare erklart. Zahlreiche Vergleichsbeispiele aus der hochmittelalterlichen Kunst informieren uber die kunstlerischen Kenntnisse der Buchmaler. Das so gewonnene Verstandnis vertieft die von den Miniaturen ausgehende urtumliche Wucht und asthetische Faszination und eroffnet einen neuen Zugang zu den Visionen der Seherin Hildegard von Bingen. Ausfuhrliche Literaturangaben und ein Register erschliessen das reichhaltige Material.
