La lectura continuada de El Quijote, que desde mil novecientos noventa y siete tiene lugar en el Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid, ha venido a institucionalizar una suerte de liturgia de la literatura, en la que participan gustosos los propios literatos, políticos, actores, toreros, periodistas, ancianos, niños, extranjeros, el pueblo en suma e incluso el clero. Es esta ocasión para mí la tercera en la que participo como coordinador de telecomunicaciones. Pero ni en esta ni en las anteriores lecturas en las que he tenido el privilegio de hacerlo, he sido capaz de desligarme del sentimiento común, que induce el compartir por dos días el propósito de hacer de la palabra un instrumento de gozo. Los lectores se suceden uno tras otro a intervalos de dos o tres minutos. Los hay de voz armoniosa y palabra redonda; los hay de voz familiar, neutra, melindre, chillona, atropellada o nerviosa. Pero ni uno solo de los que lee, se aleja un punto del respeto que la lectura pública a todos nos merece. Sin embargo, ha sido en esta tercera lectura cuando he podido disfrutar a plenitud de la gracia y la profundidad de una historia tan ingeniosamente puesta por Dios en el corazón de un hombre. En contrapartida, este tardío descubrimiento, ha tenido el efecto de un cierto desgarro en mis cada vez más menguadas ganas de emprender nuevas cosas en la vida. Don Quijote es un gracioso muy serio, que te pone los pelos de punta, y te lleva a la reflexión del sentido de la existencia misma. Induce pensamientos que te transportan del principio de los sueños al quebrantamiento tras un terrible esfuerzo. He descubierto que la lectura de El Quijote es un arma cargada de desasosiego. Empero, he de confesar que, hasta este año de dos mil, no me había sido propicio leer de cabo a rabo el gran libro. Me han empujado a ello la curiosidad que provoca la audición y el atisbo de referencias vitales que se apuntan en la lectura. No sé si la primera parte de El Quijote es mejor que la segunda, o al revés. Tal vez la segunda resulte más elaborada, por ser Cervantes más sabio cuando la escribió. Lo cierto es que, tras el tópico de libro eterno, he venido a descubrir que no sólo es así, sino que es incluso un libro necesario. Es cierto que es un libro de muchas páginas, y que versos y poemas resultan un tanto dificultosos; pero El Quijote hay que releerlo tantas cuantas veces sea preciso recargar de sabiduría el alma. He escuchado por ahí que la locura de don Quijote permite que brote en él lo más real y verídico de su ser, y es así como crea un mundo falso. Al tiempo que convengo en esto, pienso en el inmenso valor que es preciso tener para crear un mundo nuevo, incluso en la fantasía. Todo cambia, las referencias necesarias se trocan en otras ilusorias y no queda lugar del pensamiento al que aferrarse. También he atisbado al inquieto don Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, llegando a la sabiduría tras un indecible sufrimiento. No sé con quién sienta mayor afinidad, sí con Cervantes, en el cautiverio de Argel, con don Quijote, en el deambular por la quimera, o con Sancho, en su necesidad de pan y de queso. Manchego, como ambos, creo tener tanto de Quijote como de Sancho. De un lado el idealismo de quien aspira a la eternidad; de otro, el realismo preñado de un toque humanista de quien se ve forzado a la supervivencia. Este Quijote del año dos mil me está haciendo daño. Los lectores desgranan las frases, a las que yo doy continuación en el libro, y al tiempo me pierdo en las volutas de la ensoñación que sus palabras me van dibujando. Me duelen las burlonas verdades de este bendito libro. Tal vez sea el hecho de que, como don Quijote, me hallo cercano a los cincuenta - edad en la que, según Aristóteles, muere el alma -; tal vez sea el desconsuelo de que mi horizonte profesional o de proyectos se encuentra próximo a su fin, y no tenga ánimos para levantar el vuelo si otros distintos a los diarios se presentan.
