George Eliot, de son vrai nom Mary Ann (ou Mary Anne) Evans, est une romancière britannique née le 22 novembre 1819 à Nuneaton et morte le 22 décembre 1880 à Chelsea, Londres. Elle est considérée comme un des plus grands écrivains victoriens, tous sexes confondus. Ses romans, qui se situent dans une Angleterre provinciale, sont connus pour leur réalisme et leur profondeur psychologique. Elle prit un nom de plume à consonance masculine afin que son oeuvre soit prise au sérieux. Bien que les auteurs féminins de cette période publiaient librement sous leur vrai nom, l'usage d'un nom masculin lui aurait permis de s'assurer que ses oeuvres ne soient pas perçues comme de simples romans d'amour. L'autre facteur décisif a pu être le souhait d'être jugé séparément de son travail d'éditeur et de critique déjà reconnu et le désir de préserver sa vie privée des curiosités du public et notamment sa relation scandaleuse avec George Henry Lewes, un homme marié avec qui elle vécut plus de 20 ans. Biographie Mary Anne Evans est le troisième enfant de Robert et Christiana Evans (née Pearson). Son père, Robert Evans, est régisseur au château d'Arbury Hall, appartenant à la famille Newdigate (Warwickshire) et habite avec sa famille une ferme en bordure de la propriété. D'un précédent mariage de son père avec Harriet Poynton, Mary Anne a un demi-frère et une demi-soeur. Au début des années 1820, la famille déménage quelque part entre Nuneaton et Coventry. Les débuts dans la vie sont difficiles, dans une société britannique aux classes sociales très hiérarchisées. La jeune Marian (contraction de Mary Anne) se révèle d'un caractère obstiné et ombrageux. Grâce à la position de son père dans le manoir, elle se voit autorisée à fréquenter la bibliothèque du château; c'est là qu'elle fera son éducation dans les livres, à la lecture de Walter Scott, de Shakespeare. À treize ans, elle est envoyée dans une école de religieuses baptistes à Coventry, où elle apprend le français et découvre Pascal. Très vite, la religion prend une grande influence dans sa vie. Résumé Middlemarch (1871-1872) est sans doute le plus beau roman de George Eliot, en tout cas son roman le plus complet (le sixième sur sept). Deux intrigues sentimentales principales, l'histoire des deux mariages de Dorothea et le mariage malheureux de Lydgate, jeune médecin ambitieux, avec la vulgaire Rosamond Vincy, se détachent sur un fond foisonnant de personnages et d'événements, d'épisodes intéressants, amusants, émouvants. Un des charmes de George Eliot est dans cette surabondance de détails. Nous avons fait figurer en préface un beau texte de Virginia Woolf sur George Eliot: " L'issue fut triomphale pour elle, quel qu'ait pu être le destin de ses créatures; et quand nous nous rappelons tout ce qu'elle a osé, tout ce qu'elle a accompli, la façon dont, malgré tous les obstacles qui jouaient contre elle (le sexe, la santé, les conventions), elle a cherché toujours plus de savoir, toujours plus de liberté jusqu'au jour où le corps, accablé par son double fardeau, s'effondra, épuisé, nous devons poser sur sa tombe toutes les brassées de lauriers et de roses que nous possédons.
