Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2005 im Fachbereich Medien / Kommunikation - Film und Fernsehen, Note: 2,3, Universität Lüneburg, Veranstaltung: Dokumentarfilm, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: "Krisenzeiten sind Treibhäuser für Dokumentarfilme" ist Klaus Kreimeier der Meinung. Nach den Ereignissen des 11. September 2001 schien Amerika in solch einer Krise gefangen. Wie gelähmt war man gegenüber der Offenbarung auch als Supermacht selbst angreif- und verwundbar zu sein. So einfach und scheinbar einleuchtend die Gegenmaßnahmen der Regierung George W. Bushs erschienen, so groß war die Ernüchterung nach einem Erwachen aus der Starre des Schockzustandes. Der Einmarsch im Irak blieb nicht die versprochene schnelle und effektive Gegenaktion und es offenbarte sich einmal mehr, wie wenig die amerikanischen Medien über Zusammenhänge und Hintergründe informierten. Pünktlich zur Präsidentschaftswahl im Jahre 2004 veröffentlichte Michael Moore seinen Film Fahrenheit 9/11, der Hilfe versprach in Hinblick auf keimende Unsicherheit und Misstrauen gegenüber der Politik. So ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass ein Film, der vorgibt aufzuklären und aufzudecken was im Dunkel der amerikanischen Desinformation liegt, der erfolgreichste Dokumentarfilm der Welt wurde. Auch wenn bis heute noch kein einheitlicher Konsens über Merkmale herrscht, die einen Film zum Dokumentarfilm machen, lässt sich in Fahrenheit 9/11 eine Radikalität in der Anwendung filmischer Mittel feststellen, die viele Kritiker an seiner Genrezuordnung zweifeln lässt. Die Bewegung des Direct Cinema, bekannte sich in verstärkter Weise zu den Grundzügen des Dokumentarfilms - einer möglichst objektiven Darstellung einer außerfilmischen Realität und Wirklichkeit. Sie scheint mit ihren Vorgaben an einen Film im direkten Gegensatz zu Fahrenheit 9/11 zu stehen. Michael Moore ignoriert diesen dokumentarischen Grundgedanken scheinbar. Zu groß war sein Wunsch, mit seinem Film die Präsidentschaftswahlen zu beeinflussen.
