About the Book

Albert H. Rausch ist heute ein vergessener Dichter und das moglicherweise zurecht. Bis in die 1960er Jahre wurden seine Werke jedoch durchaus geschatzt und zwar von Burgertum und Aristokratie gleichermassen Die vorliegende Arbeit sucht nach dem Grund fur diesen Erfolg und findet ihn bei einem konservativen Publikum, das Rauschs Kulturkritik an den damaligen okonomischen, politischen und kulturellen Modernisierungsprozessen teilte und seine asthetizistischen, neuidealistischen, antirationalistischen und antidemokratischen Gegenentwurfe als Losungsweg aus der Krise begriff. Rauschs Kulturkritik ist ebenso der Schlussel zum Verstandnis seines jahrelangen Sympathisierens mit dem Nationalsozialismus, wobei hier die Frage beantwortet werden soll, warum der Dichter sein Wohlwollen einer politischen Bewegung schenkte, deren Grundideale ihn, den feinnervigen Asthetizisten, kunstsinnigen Humanisten und homoerotisch Liebenden, doch hatten abstossen mussen. Daruber hinaus eroffnet die Arbeit weitreichende Ausblicke auf die konservative Kulturkritik der ersten Halfte des 20. Jahrhunderts sowie auf die Grunde, die konservative Intellektuelle zum Sympathisieren mit dem Nationalsozialismus bewogen. Sie erzahlt auch ein Dichterleben und spannt einen Bogen von Rauschs Herkunft aus der hessischen Provinz uber seine Begegnungen mit Stefan George und die Verbindungen in das Grossburgertum und die Aristokratie bis zu jener in Oberitalien noch heute bekannten Intervention, durch die es ihm im Zweiten Weltkrieg gelang, mehrere Orte vor der Zerstorung durch die deutschen Streitkrafte zu bewahren.
