El libro de Emma Goldman, Mi Desilusión en Rusia (1923), es el testimonio más dramático de los "errores" de los Bolcheviques en la construcción de una sociedad socialista.. Perseguida por su activismo en los grupos anarquistas de Nueva York y Chicago, Emma Goldman fue considerada por John Edgar Hoover, el futuro director del FBI, como "la mujer más peligrosa de América". Emma es pionera del feminismo y la libertad sexual en Estados Unidos. También de los derechos de los homosexuales, que la emparenta con el sueño de una sociedad amorosa, libre y tolerante, que Walt Whitman había esbozado en Cálamus, su racimo de versos celebratorio del "dulce amor de los camaradas".
En la crítica del Bolchevismo no hay en Emma Goldman ningún resabio de reccionarismo, ni mucho menos una defensa del capitalismo en su fase de predominio del capital financiero. La suya es una crítica, apasionada sí, pero auténticamente fraternal, a una Revolución proletaria posible que había sido el ideal de toda su vida.
Exiliada de Estados Unidos por oponerse a la I Gran Guerra y al reclutamiento forzoso, la famosa directora de la revista Madre Tierra (1906), llega finalmente en 1919 a Rusia, la tierra promisoria. Para Emma Goldman éste fue un retorno a su país natal y la oportunidad de participar en la construcción de una nueva sociedad que hiciera realidad el Paraíso en la TIerra para los trabajadores del mundo. Ilusionada por la Rusia roja, su inicial encantamiento paulatinamente fue transformándose, no sin profundas resistencias internas, en un completo desencanto. Su testimonio se hace más vívido cuando narra sus entrevistas con John Reed, Máximo Gorki, Piotr Kropotkin, Angélica Balanova, Galina Kuzmenko, Vladimir Lenin y otros célebres personajes de la época. Tal poliglosia hace de su versión un abanico de opiniones, un tejido del más diverso pluralismo. Sin embargo, acontecimientos como el pacto de Brest-Litovsk con Alemania, o la represión del Ejército Rojo a los marineros de Kronstadt, o la persecusión del héroe campesino de Ucrania, Néstor Majnó, la llevan a esbozar la crítica más profunda sobre el modelo autoritario, de partido único, apoyado en la temible Cheka, que abolía toda iniciativa creativa de las masas y sustituía los "Soviets", o consejos de obreros, por el Estado totalitario.
Olvidada por décadas, esta crítica de Emma Goldman del modelo "por arriba" de construcción del socialismo -crítica no única, pero sí la más profunda si se recuerdan las advertencias que el anarquista Piotr Kropotkin y la comunista Rosa de Luxemburgo habían dirigido a Lenin-, a la luz de la caída del Muro de Berlín y el desmoronamiento del "socialismo-real", en la última década del siglo XX, su libro vuelve a ser leído y valorado en todo lo que resulta de profético.
