Eine stärkere Orientierung am Kunden und deren Bedürfnissen ist somit für ein innovierendes Unternehmen unabdingbar, um eine hohe Marktakzeptanz der Produkte sicherzustellen und das Risiko von Fehlschlägen zu reduzieren Aktuelle Flopraten im Investitionsgüterbereich schwanken zwischen 20 und 40 Prozent und in Konsumgütermärkten zwischen 30 und 90 Prozent. Ein Wandel hat sich nicht nur hin zu kürzeren Produktlebenszyklen, sondern auch vom geschlossenen zum offenen Produktentwicklungsprozess abgezeichnet, der über die Unternehmensgrenzen hinweggeht und von partnerschaftlichen Aktivitäten bestimmt wird. Zahlreiche Unternehmen entwickeln nicht nur in unternehmensinternen Bereichen Ideen für neue Produkte, sondern sie holen das Wissen außerhalb des Unternehmens ein, um es für die Produktentwicklung nutzbar zu machen. Eine Öffnung des Innovationsprozesses und eine aktive strategische Nutzung der Außenwelt scheint als eine Lösung aus dem obig genannten Innovationsdilemma zu sein. Besonders der Kunde, welcher bislang als kaum ausgeschöpfte Quelle von Ideen und Leistungsinnovationen galt, wird als wertvolle unternehmensexterne Wissens- quelle angesehen und rückt daher immer mehr in den Interessenfokus unternehmerischen Handelns.
