Nous avons mesuré les coefficients de transfert thermique des grilles métalliques par l'analyse de la réponse à un échelon de température; et la perte de charge avec un tube en U, pour en dériver le coefficient de friction. Les grilles étudiées diffèrent par la nature de leur matériau, leur porosité et le diamètre des fils. La longueur et la compacité de l'empilement, ainsi que le débit de gaz, ont été variés. Nous avons établi des corrélations reliant les performances des grilles à leurs caractéristiques géométriques. Elles permettent de prévoir l'efficacité d'un échangeur compact et d'en optimiser la conception. Ce type d'échangeur peut opérer efficacement comme un régénérateur cyclique avec les avantages d'une opération auto-thermique en régime pseudo- stationnaire, étant celui-ci le fonctionnement de base des réacteurs à inversion de flux.
