Mesas de Conversación es un material que se puede usar como libro de texto para un curso de conversación, o como material complementario para clases de conversación fuera y dentro del aula. Si se emplea como libro de texto, se recomienda que se use con estudiantes que ya hayan tenido, por lo menos, dos semestres de español. Si se usa como material de apoyo, se puede implementar a partir del primer semestre, siempre que se hayan cubierto algunas de las estructuras gramaticales necesarias para llevar a cabo las actividades. El objetivo primordial del manual es la interacción in situ. Para tal objetivo, el vocabulario juega un papel de gran importancia, lo cual capacita al estudiante a llevar a cabo las actividades interactivas. Dado que la conversación es el enfoque, los textos que se presentan son breves. En cuanto a la selección del vocabulario, se ha intentado que este sea el de uso más frecuente. Sabemos que es un gran reto, por lo que también hemos proveído, cuando ha sido posible, información sobre la variedad en el mundo hispanohablante. En segundo lugar, se proveen estructuras socio-pragmáticas para la conversación como la de iniciar, mantener o finalizar el turno de habla. Algunas de las estructuras comprenden expresiones fijas y marcadores del discurso, con ejemplos para su clarificación. También presentamos algunas expresiones idiomáticas y refranes a lo largo de los capítulos. Por último, hemos de recalcar que la mayoría de las actividades se presenta de forma secuenciada: trabajo individual, seguido de trabajo en pareja o en grupo, para finalizar en discusiones generales. En otras palabras se va progresando de actividades controladas, semi-controladas a abiertas. La organización del presente material se ha diseñado como un andamiaje para llegar a un producto final, el cual se puede dar en una misma actividad, o al finalizar una serie de actividades. Lo importante es que el estudiante sabe, en todo momento, el porqué realiza las actividades, ayudándole a hacer conexiones con situaciones de la vida real. En otras palabras, el objetivo es que el estudiante pueda transferir los conocimientos adquiridos de una actividad a situaciones reales o verídicas. Antes de llevar a cabo las actividades interactivas, se comienza siempre con una actividad de vocabulario que, en la mayoría de los casos, es emparejarlo con fotos, con definiciones o colocar el léxico aprendido en un mapa conceptual. Una vez trabajado el vocabulario, el aprendiente tendrá mayor capacidad para la interacción. Se ha intentado que el contenido de las actividades interactivas reflejen lo mejor posible conversaciones de la vida real como la de comentar sobre una película, describir un cuadro, expresar gustos y preferencias, pero siempre con un propósito marcado. Hemos de mencionar que, mientras que en el manual de conversación las explicaciones gramaticales tienen poca cabida, en la guía didáctica informamos al docente del tipo de estructura gramatical que el estudiante necesitará saber o practicar para ejecutar una actividad interactiva en concreto.
