About the Book

PART MEMOIR. PART DEVOTIONAL. A BOOK TO ENCOURAGE ALL WHO SUFFER.At the age of 20, Merry Hauk was diagnosed with Raynaud's Syndrome. As her body progressively weakened, the diagnosis was changed to polymyositis, a degenerative muscle disease. She could barely lift her arms, and walking became very difficult. She took massive doses of steroids to combat the disease. Eventually she became bedridden. Through the power of prayer, faith, and medical care, Merry recovered enough to function almost normally. She returned to work, got involved again at church, and socialized with friends. When she thought she had a full life ahead of her, a drunk driver cut her life short. She was 25 years old.Throughout Merry's illness and subsequent recovery, she kept a written dialogue with God. Her journal and diary entries are like letters to God, written as one friend to another. Indeed, she began most entries with a salutation to God, such as, "Greetings, Lord," or, "Good morning, God." The wisdom and insight they contain are pertinent to her life but also worthwhile to all believers.Merry never lost faith in God, and she never doubted God's love for her. Still, she questioned God's purpose for her illness and she struggled with the uncertainties of each tomorrow.Merry Meditations uses excerpts from her journals and diaries to show how illness can, in many ways, be a blessing in life. Merry thanked God for her illness because it helped strengthen her faith, and it gave her a new appreciation for how people can be a blessing to each other. The excerpts collected in this book were selected for the wisdom and insight they impart to all believers in their walk with God. Some excerpts inspired my own thoughts and reflections, for what they are worth. Each excerpt is paired with a Bible verse specifically chosen to reinforce that excerpt's topic.Merry used the Bible as a major source of support and encouragement. The words of God gave her hope that she was never alone. God was always with her just as God had been with those in the Bible who suffered. The Bible also gave her permission to be honest with God, expressing frustration, doubts, questions, and anger, just as those in the Bible did.Reading Merry Meditations will help you understand that you are not alone in your questions, your frustrations, and your anger at God for the trials of life. While not minimizing the pain and frustration that accompanies illness, these devotionals show that it is possible to rejoice through illness, suffering, and loss. Merry Meditations will instill confidence that God is always with you and wants to be involved in every aspect of your life. Merry' wisdom and insight will help all who suffer, and their friends and loved ones, too. She knew your discouragement. She felt your pain. Her words will comfort you. Her faith will inspire you. Her life will be an example of how one ordinary person can have an extraordinary impact on the lives of others.Part memoir, part devotional, Merry Meditations is a book to encourage all who suffer illness, pain, loss, or hardship of any kind.
