Der ursprünglich in den USA entstandene Unternehmensmarkt ist deshalb Trend auf globaler Ebene geworden. Immer mehr Firmen nutzen diesen, um Unternehmensanteile zu veräußern. Dadurch können sich die Unternehmen wieder auf das Kerngeschäft fokussieren, den Vorgang im Rahmen der Investitionsfinanzierung anwenden und Konfliktsituationen innerhalb der Gesellschaft lösen. Die Akquisiteure streben hingegen die Beschleunigung des Umsatzwachstums, die Erschließung neuer Märkte und die Erhöhung der Wettbewerbsintensität an. Gerade im deutschen Mobilfunkmarkt findet das Instrument Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) häufigen Zuspruch. Die Liberalisierung des deutschen Telekommunikationsmarktes begann im Jahre 1989 und wurde zum 1. Januar 1998 vollständig abgeschlossen. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt verlor die Bundespost ihr Monopol in den Bereichen Endgeräte, Netztechnik und leistungsgebundener Kommunikation, woraufhin die heute so umkämpfte Telekommunikationsbranche entstehen konnte. Damals drängten immer mehr Anbieter auf den Markt, die den Wettbewerb förderten. Die Sortimente wurden trotz steigender Qualität zu günstigen Preisen angeboten, sodass die drastische Wettbewerbssituation weiterhin verstärkt wurde. Aufgrund des hohen Wettbewerbsdrucks ist es nicht erstaunlich, dass in diesem Bereich regelmäßig über Unternehmenszusammenschlüsse nachgedacht wird. So gab auch die Telefonica Deutschland Holding AG (O2) am 23. Juli 2013 den Abschluss einer Vereinbarung zur Übernahme des Konkurrenten, der E-Plus Gruppe Deutschland (E-Plus), bekannt.
