About the Book

For those of you who want to gain a greater understanding of conditional immortality, then this book will give you fresh aspects that have been overlooked. There are many insights into Scripture that you will not find in the Rethinking Hell book, Edward Fudge's book, or other existing literature. Here is one example.

Luke 12:47-48
47 That servant, who knew his lord's will, and didn't prepare, nor do what he wanted, will be beaten with many stripes, 48 but he who didn't know, and did things worthy of stripes, will be beaten with few stripes. To whomever much is given, of him will much be required; and to whom much was entrusted, of him more will be asked.

No person could honestly claim that this supports the idea of eternal torment because whether a person receives many stripes or a few, at some point, they will stop. Of course, traditionalists would try to refute it by saying that this text only shows the severity or degrees of punishment. But that argument has a significant weakness. The terms many and few inherently imply a temporal limitation. Nothing in this text implies an eternal duration. That idea has to be read into it.
And there is one very important thing I must explain about Luke 12:48 which my fellow scholars in conditional immortality have missed. Luke 12:48 has the phrase beaten with few stripes. And the Greek word for few: oligas, has this meaning-few, small, a while. This form of the word is used only one other time in Heb. 12:10. This verse compares the discipline of earthly fathers to God's. Here, it is translated as-a little while.

Heb. 12:10
10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.

So the conditionalists' explanation for different degrees of retribution that will ultimately end has legitimacy when you see what the Greek word oligas means. In these two verses, it either has a numerical limit or a time limit. Either way, they substantiate conditionalism. And I find it quite surprising that this important information could have been missed. But traditionalists could still try to argue that this text means eternal punishment if Luke 12:47-48 is interpreted this way.

Luke 12:47-48
47 And that servant who knew his master's will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating. 48 But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, will receive a light beating.

But this still indicates temporal punishment as bad human servants were never beaten: endlessly. And now, here is one more example of an overlooked aspect.

1 John 2:17
17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

And I want to tell you something about this exceptional verse. It is different from other verses which tell us the saved will live forever or have eternal life. It is distinctive because it tells us the person who does the will of God abides (menei) forever. So just exactly what does the original Greek word menei mean? Here is the definition that is given by Strong's Exhaustive Concordance.

A primary verb; to stay (in a given place, state, relation or expectancy) -- abide, continue, dwell, endure, be present, remain,

From this explanation we can see that it means to continue to be in existence. So this verse is abundantly clear in showing us that only believers will continue to exist (abide) forever while the unsaved will cease to exist.

This is just a glimpse of the fresh insights that await you in this book.
