About the Book

"The Quaid e Azam's spirit came to me. I told him that I'd done a very bad thing when I broke the Murti and that I had lost a son because of it." A true story of murder, jealousy, politics and violence set in Pakistan, India and London. A story immersed in the paranormal. A book that captures the optimism of a young Pakistan in the years following partition and the buzz of the teddy-boy London of the 1950s. Seen through the eyes of Farida, the rich man's daughter, 'Memory of Beheram' takes the reader on an emotional maelstrom that begins with the British withdrawal from India in 1947 and the mass population displacements which followed. It was a time when communities that had peacefully co-existed for centuries now waged war against each other. But amongst the chaos and the population movements, fortunes could also be made. It tells the story of the jobbing photographer who bought a palace. With his newfound wealth, that jobbing photographer could take on anyone: even the Pakistan Government, which had requisitioned the ground floor of his palace to house foreign diplomats. But it all came tumbling down when his son Beheram, the champion swimmer, died suddenly at Hawkesbay Beach and his body was swept out to sea. It was just as the sadhu had predicted two weeks previously when he had warned Beheram against going near water. Beheram was only 19. Only Douglas and Conchita knew how he had died. But it took a rooftop séance and a gunpoint confession to cut through their lies and establish the truth of his murder. Farida's life would never be the same. After Jehangir had won his battle with the Pakistan Government and cleared out the diplomats, he sold the palace and moved the family to London, the city he loved, to put the tragedy behind them and start a new life. He had been stationed there during the War. And many years previously, as an Oxford University student, Jehangir had become acquainted with the Lincoln's Inn barrister who was to become his life-long friend and mentor. The barrister's name was Mohammad Ali Jinnah, who later founded the new State of Pakistan. Farida found settling into London difficult because she was denied the liberties which her English schoolfriends took for granted. Yes - she was born into privilege. But she had no happiness. Would you be happy if you were not allowed to choose your friends? If you could not even go to the shops without your brothers following you? Then she saw an escape in the form of the handsome young teddy boy. They first met secretly, with the help of an older sister. Then, with some coaching from Farida, he was able to ingratiate himself into her family. She was besotted. And it would give her the freedom she craved. Then the mask slipped. The handsome teddy boy became a drunken bully. With the alcohol came the violence - and eventually to her husband's impotence. Instead of enjoying freedom, Farida became trapped in a marriage that was as sexually unfulfilling as it was violent. Over the next 18 years, amongst the beatings, she suffered cigarette burns, a burst eardrum, and broken ribs. But she was always in denial and made excuses for Jock's behaviour. Worst of all was the murder of her pet dog as an act of revenge because she refused to look after Jock's incontinent mother. It was then the same family from which she had sought escape that now rallied around to give her the courage to break free. Farida never let him break her spirit. In the book, Farida also talks intimately about her life and her loves. The book also contains rare family photographs including one of a young Prince Faisal on an informal visit to Pakistan.
