About the Book

This book, Tizta, Memories, which has been translated into English and presented to be read.
It has some elements of history but written to depict his experience in the battle against the Italian invader.
In the introductory part, he mentions the news that the Italian government had a strong desire to colonize Ethiopia and that its desire was made real after occupying Eritrea in the north and Somalia in the South. He emphasized the fact that they had strong desire to colonize Ethiopia for so many years was a witness even after occupying some places in north and south Ethiopia (Eritrea and Somalia).
In 1928 E.C., when the invasion by the Italian government was heard of, and as a battle was waged against them, the former governor of Gojjam, later called Prince Ras Imiru, joined the Northern Force led by Dejazmach Ayalew Birru and went to the War Front called The Shirie Front in Tigrai.
So Ato Haddis Alemayehu joined the Northern Force which was led by Dejazmach Ayalew Biru, along with Prince Ras Imiru. and together they moved to the north.
On the way before crossing Tekezie River, they landed in Dabat and experienced the first fighter plane hovering over them. Order was given to shoot to the planes but no outcome and they proposed different possibilities why they could not drop a single plane. Like that, they continued their journey, crossed Tekezie River and reached a place called Debaguna. It took them more than two months to reach Endaselassie, near Selekelaka.
The causality inflicted on the army forces was high and so it was proposed to retreat with the idea of changing the battle field from this area where the forces were exposed to the flying planes to a densely forested area where they could get shelter. The site proposed was South-west Ethiopia. First they moved to Debark and the crossed the border to Sudan, Khartoum. From Khartoum, they moved to Gorie, a historical town in the south-west Ethiopia. The next move was to Keffa and Gonga.
It was in this area tha Ras Imiru and Haddis Alemayehu were captivated. The captives including Ato Haddis were first taken to Jima. Honorable Dejazmach Taye Gulilatie and Ras Imiru were flown direct to Italy from Jima. Lij Yilma Deresa and Haddis were singled out of the many captives to be exiled to Rome in the month of January 1937. Lij Yilma and Haddis were first flown to Addis and then to Rome.
Their life as war prisoners was first in island of Panza, later in Lipari and finally in Longobuko. Longobuko is a small town found in south Italy at the edge of a high mountain called 'Calabria'. They stayed for seven years as war prisoners in Italy. In 1843 in the month of October when the Italians were defeated in the Second World War, they were released from prison.
