De repente, en los años sesenta se produce un cambio: comienza la televisión (empezamos a mirar fuera), conocemos a los Beatles, vienen turistas a contemplar con curiosidad nuestra forma de vivir, con lo que nos traen sus costumbres y nos abren a otros mundos. Se celebra un concilio para actualizar la Iglesia, estallan los grupos musicales con músicas nuevas, cambian las modas con rapidez y, sin darnos cuenta, en pocos años se produce un cambio y salto generacional como nunca había ocurrido.
Con la llegada de los adelantos en la mecanización del campo y la emigración a las ciudades, en pocos años aquel mundo ha desaparecido, es como si fuese de la prehistoria. Ya no conocemos cómo se desarrollaban hace unos años la vendimia, la siega, la trilla y otras labores; desconocemos los animales domésticos en las distintas faenas del campo, las fiestas de los pueblos, la liturgia de Iglesia. Se ha pasado en pocos años de ser pueblos llenos de vida, donde se daba una relación con los animales, el campo y el ambiente rural, a quedarse como pueblos fantasma habitados por ancianos, únicos testigos de lo que fue ayer y lo que es hoy día.
El libro nos retrata con fidelidad y humor aquel mundo rural donde había matanza del cerdo, un horno para cocer el pan del pueblo (o uno en cada casa), escuela en la que el maestro echaba tinta a los tinteros, la enciclopedia, plumines, secantes, pizarrines, la leche americana, los bailes, los primeros cines, la censura, las mil prohibiciones, el mundo en torno a las celebraciones religiosas, la Semana Santa, las Navidades y sus vivencias, las travesuras de aquellos niños de pueblo de la posguerra.
Lo que aquí se cuenta no es algo que sucedió hace siglos, sino que es la vida de los que hoy superan la cincuentena. Es Historia.
