About the Book

Muñeca Loca- ( crazy doll) channels the voice of different people and places in a stream of conscious narrative spanning 35 years set in Chicago's Puerto Rican neighborhood: Humboldt Park. Finding her way as a young, single mom while searching for love and spirituality Rebekah opens her heart to readers with vulnerability, strength and healing with childhood tales exploring race, identity, economic status and religion. Born to multi-ethnic parents that converted to the non-conventional religion: Jehovahs Witness, Rebekah struggles with following the rules of the strict religion (primal dancing, certain music and drugs may encourage demon possession and sex before marriage leads to discipline by shunning a.k.a disfellowshipping). Rebekah becomes pregnant out of wedlock resulting in "disfellowshipping " leading to members of the religion she has known since childhood shunning her, refusing to speak to her until she shows repentance. Pulling from working class values and childhood dreams, Rebekah leaves the religion and embarks on a path without a religion, a husband, a college education or a nine to five job- hoping to pave a way for her son to have opportunity.
About the Author: Rebekah Marcano is from Chicago and studied Fiction Writing and Dance at Columbia College Chicago. She is a single mother and owns a fitness and wellness company teaching classes and workshops in the Chicago area including Mindful Yoga to veterans with PTSD. "I knew I was a writer when I wrote a 30 page letter to the first boy who broke my heart. And the second. And to anyone that made me happy or sad or angry. I knew that writing was a tool of healing for me when I could read the words I wrote without pain because they were no longer trapped inside and I had a voice that could be heard. When I could change a painful story into a comedy. When other people could understand me with laughter, tears or smiles so big their cheeks hurt". Rebekah has performed Latin dance internationally and uses her love for artistic, physical expression as a method in her writing combining dance and meditation to tap into the creative writing flow. "In the Fiction Writing Department at Columbia College I learned the Story Writing Workshop Method which allowed me to find my voice and see life through many lenses and perspectives in a safe nurturing non-judgmental environment. Writing in college was the first time in my life I could speak freely from my true voice". While Rebekah enjoys entertaining audiences with humor or inspiring others with stories of transformation, it is the PROCESS of writing she also hopes to share with others to find their own voice and healing through the creative arts. "The process of writing varies for everyone. I love using different creative tools such as music, dance or meditation to get to that place where the fingers have to keep up with the thoughts streaming through the mind.Writing is powerful and can be transformational and healing. For me writing is a creative tool to express emotions, share experiences, or even plan out goals and dreams. My process of writing is a combination of dance movement and meditation."
