In dieser Arbeit soll diese Verbindung näher beleuchtet werden. Vor allem soll Veit Harlans Film Jud Süß näher betrachtet werden und wie er als Film funktioniert. Die filmische Konkretisierung, was als melodramatisch bezeichnet wird, kann sehr unterschiedliche Formen annehmen, deshalb gilt es zunächst zu erklären, was unter einem Melodrama, vor allem in Hinblick auf den Regisseur Veit Harlan verstanden wird. Das Spektrum der Spielfilme, die zur Zeit der nationalsozialistischen Herrschaft in Deutschland entstanden sind, ist außergewöhnlich breit. Adolf Hitler war Liebhaber von Unterhaltung, die man eher als harmlos definieren kann. Dazu zählten: Liebesfilme, Komödien, Operetten, Lustspiele und Revuefilme, mit aufregenden Figuren in glamouröser Umgebung.'' Joseph Goebbels, der Propagandaminister von Hitler, der auch, zuständig für die Filmproduktion des Regimes (war), hatte andere Vorlieben''. Für ihn waren eher Filme interessant, die auf historischen oder auch literarischen Stoffen basieren, auch Filme im Künstlermilieu, Dramen, die Ereignisse überhöhen und verdichten, auf dass im Publikum das nationale und politische Gewissen gestärkt werde.'' Hitler verabscheute es jedoch, wenn Politik in Filmen betrieben wurde. Seine Aussage hierzu war: , Mir ist es zum Ekel, wenn unter dem Vorwand der Kunst Politik gemacht wird.'' Dahingehend versicherte Goebbels 1933, dass unter seiner Ägide die Filmkunst frei bleibe''. Jedoch sagte Goebbels in der gleichen Rede auch, dass man nicht denken solle, dass die gegenwärtige Krise eine materielle ist; die Filmkrise ist vielmehr eine geistige, sie wird bestehen, solange wir nicht den Mut haben, den deutschen Film von der Wurzel aus zu reformieren.''
