Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2011 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Komparatistik, Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft, Note: 2,0, Technische Universität Chemnitz (Institut für Germanistik und Kommunikation), Veranstaltung: Hunger und Essen in der Literatur, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Mehr als sechzig Jahre sind vergangen, seit die Konzentrationslager in Auschwitz, Buchenwald und Bergen-Belsen aufgelöst wurden. Sie wurden zu einem Mahnmal für nachfolgende Generationen, einem Symbol für die schlimmsten Ausläufer totalitärer Herrschaftssysteme. Im Kontext der Verarbeitung tauchten nicht nur unzählige nonfiktionale Biographien und Autobiographien Überlebender auf, sondern auch fiktionale Texte. Zum einen lässt sich dieses Thema in vielerlei Hinsicht aufarbeiten und literarisch ausbauen, zum anderen ist es ein besonderes Anliegen von Nachkriegsliteraten, mit diesem dunklen Kapitel der deutschen Geschichte umzugehen. So auch der 1889 in Osnabrück geborene Schriftsteller Erich Maria Remarque, der nach eigenen Angaben1 ein Gedenken an persönliche Opfer des Nationalsozialismus setzen wollte, und seinen 1952 zum ersten Mal erschienenen Roman 'Der Funke Leben' seiner vom Volksgerichtshof hingerichteten Schwester Elfriede Scholz widmete. Der Roman erzählt die Geschichte der Insassen und Wächter des fiktiven Konzentrationslagers Mellern in den letzten Tagen des Kriegs. Die nahe liegende Stadt wird von alliierten Fliegern angegriffen, und in Häftling Nr. 509, dem Protagonisten des Romans, keimt neue Hoffnung, ein Funke Leben auf. Der Widerstand im Lager erwacht, die Insassen, obwohl kaum mehr als wandelnde Skelette, organisieren, schmuggeln und verstecken, stetig bewacht von SS-Männern, die das Unvermeidliche Ende des Kriegs verleugnen. Kritik wurde vielfach laut, als der Roman in deutscher Sprache erschien, denn Erfahrungen aus dem Konzentrationslagern konnten unmöglich in einem Roman verarbeitet werden, dies würde die Opfer entehren.
