About the Book

English summary: Using the example of the two imperial cities of Augsburg and Nuremberg, this study on Mehrsprachigkeit in der Fruehen Neuzeit (multilingualism in the early modern era) examines objectives, strategies and methods in late medieval and early modern language learning and addresses the question of to what extent the learning and the use of foreign languages was of any significance in social life. Based on a comprehensive analysis of archival and printed source material (traders' letters, council records, textbooks and grammars) from the Late Middle Ages until the end of the Holy Roman Empire (1806), this volume particularly examines the teaching of languages in cities, meaning the institutionalized learning of languages in schools, the origin, methods and social function of language teachers, as well as the textbooks that were produced, printed and used in these two cities.
