Zum 50ten Jubiläum des Jahres 1968 steht natürlich die Betrachtung dieses Jahres publizistisch-historisch im Zentrum der Wissenschaft und ebenso auch in der Regional- und Lokalgeschichte. Mit diesem Band zur Schulgeschichte der BTHS Homberg möchte der Autor aber darüber hinausgehen und den Focus auf die Folgen der Chiffre 1968 legen. Wie und wann zeigten sich erste Veränderungen an den Schulen, die man auf die Forderungen der 68er zurückführen kann? Wann begannen Veränderungsprozesse, die Schulen, hier am Beispiel des Homberger Gymnasiums, liberalisierten und demokratisierten? Nach dem Attentat auf Rudi Dutschke am 11. April 1968 in West-Berlin begann der schleichende Zerfall der Bewegung in unzählige "Ismen". Nun gab es Maoisten, Trotzkisten, Leninisten, Feministen, Pazifisten, Ökologen, etc. Dann kam ein Jahr später der Regierungswechsel in Bonn in der alten Bundesrepublik von den CDU-geführten Regierungen hin zur sozial-liberalen Regierungskoalition unter Bundeskanzler Willy Brandt, dem ersten SPD-Kanzler der Republik, als ein einschneidendes Ereignis. Und Brandt reagierte auf die 68er und das schon in seiner Regierungserklärung vom 28. Oktober 1969 und bot ihnen eine neue politische Heimat. "[...] Wir wollen mehr Demokratie wagen", lautete das Motto von Brandts Regierungserklärung. Brandt wollte dafür sorgen, dass "jeder Bürger die Möglichkeit erhält, an der Reform von Staat und Gesellschaft mitzuwirken." Und das sollte auch für die Jüngeren der Republik gelten. Brandt sah in diesem Zusammenhang auch die Notwendigkeit bildungspolitischer Reformen. "Bildung und Ausbildung, Wissenschaft und Forschung stehen an der Spitze der Reformen, die es bei uns vorzunehmen gilt. Wir haben die Verantwortung, soweit sie von der Bundesregierung zu tragen ist, im Bundesministerium für Bildung und Wissenschaft zusammengefasst". Und Brandt weiter: "Wir können nicht die perfekte Demokratie schaffen. Wir wollen eine Gesellschaft, die mehr Freiheit bietet und mehr Mitverantwortung fordert. [...] Wir suchen keine Bewunderer; wir brauchen Menschen, die kritisch mitdenken, mitentscheiden und mitverantworten". Und das setzten in den Jahren 1969 bis 1973 viele Schüler der BTHS z.T. gegen große Widerstände um. Und der Anfang lag sogar vor der Ära Brandt. Manchmal, aber selten, wurden dabei auch illegale Mittel eingesetzt. Das kritische Denken, das oft genug sich selbst noch beigebracht werden musste, hielt Einzug in die altehrwürdigen Mauern des ehemals Königlich-Preußischen Lehrerseminars.
