Arriving in Alabama, she hopes to save up enough money to continue her journey to safety, and convinces Jeffrey Ellis, the wealthy co-owner of a machinery plant, to give her a job. There she strikes up a bond with the equally courageous Cuban.
Cuban is on a similar path to Shona. Relentlessly abused because of the color of his skin, his sole ambition is to earn enough to escape to New York, but Ellis's brutal and callous business partner, Larry Bruce, and his racist workforce are hell-bent on making Cuban's life unbearable.
