Damals waren Begriffe wie Gender oder Männlichkeitsforschung noch unbekannt; es wurde ein dem damaligen Zeitgeist entsprechendes Frauen/Männerbild vermittelt. Die allererste Szene der Show zeigt die beiden Protagonistinnen Lucy und Ethel in der Küche beim Abwasch, während die Männer derweil im Wohnzimmer sitzen und rauchen. I Love Lucy gilt als die erste Sitcom im Fernsehen und es scheint ganz so, als ob sich in den letzten 60 Jahren das Genre nur marginal verändert hat. Denn: bei der Sitcom How I Met Your Mother, angesiedelt in der heutigen Zeit, spielt die erste Szene der ersten Folge ebenfalls in der Küche. Nur trinken hier die Männer ein Bier und ein anderer Protagonist lässt sich zeitgleich bei einem Barbier rasieren. Bereits in dieser ersten Folge - in den allerersten Minuten schon - wird also mit den gängigen Klischees von Männlichkeit gespielt. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die männlichen Hauptcharaktere der US-Sitcoms I Love Lucy und How I met your Mother zu untersuchen und zu vergleichen. I Love Lucy gilt als die erste Sitcom überhaupt und ist im anglo-amerikanischen Raum ein Meilenstein der Fernsehgeschichte. How I Met Your Mother bricht formal mit dem klassischen Setting und der Erzählstrategie einer Sitcom - ob dies auch für die Figurenzeichnung/Darstellung von Sex und Gender gilt, soll im Folgenden untersucht werden
