Sie ist nicht nur Existenzbedingung von Gemeinschaften, sondern auch Vorrausetzung ihrer Entstehung. Ihre Funktionen sind dabei so heterogen wie die Gemeinschaftsmitglieder, die sie verbindet: Kommunikation kann verständigend wirken, aber auch abgrenzend, sie ist mal absichtsvoll, mal unbewusst, sie informiert, beeinflusst und strukturiert. Jeder Gesellschaftstypus hat auch "seine" Medien hervorgebracht. Im Jahr 1980 verwendet "Der Spiegel" in seiner Berichterstattung erstmals den Begriff "Medienzeitalter" (vgl. Spiegel 46/1980, S. 85), durch welchen unsere postindustrielle Gesellschaft heute oftmals charakterisiert wird. Der Ausdruck -seit seiner erstmaligen Verwendung in dem Magazin vor 30 Jahren noch durch die digitale Entwicklung erweitert - verdeutlicht, dass Medien in den hochentwickelten Staaten der Erde heute nicht nur Teil des Alltages, sondern auch konstitutiv für die gesellschaftliche Struktur geworden sind. Insbesondere innerhalb von Machtsystemen hat die mediale Kommunikation große Bedeutung gefunden: Durch ein Zitat Gerhard Schröders, er brauche zum Regieren lediglich "Bild, BamS und Glotze" (zit. nach Deggerich 2003), wird dieses Bewusstsein explizit deutlich: Machtausübung und mediale Kommunikation partizipieren unmittelbar voneinander. Während man unter dem Stichwort "politische Kommunikation" vornehmlich an Agitationen der Moderne denkt, Kommunikation an sich aber wie beschrieben ursprünglich und existenziell ist, stellt sich die Frage, in welcher Relation Macht und mediale Kommunikation in anderen Epochen standen.
