Die Stadt wurde zu einer der gefährlichsten Städte Lateinamerikas und der Welt. Der Terror war zu jener Zeit an jeder Ecke zu spüren. Raubüberfälle, Menschenhandel, Kokain und Morde standen an der Tagesordnung. Einige Bewohner Medellíns trafen die schwere Entscheidung die Stadt zu verlassen.

Das Buch erzählt die Geschichte der Geschwister Claudia und Rodrigo, die im Alter von sechs Jahren zu Waisen wurden, nachdem ihre Eltern Sebastián Montoya (Wissenschaftler) und Margarita García (Künstler) durch das Drogenkartell getötet wurden. Die Kinder gelangen mithilfe eines Familienfreundes von Kolumbien in die Vereinigten Staaten. Der Aufenthalt außerhalb ihres Heimatlandes war für die Kinder schwierig, egal wie sehr dieser ihnen zugutekam. Die Kultur, die Menschen, das Klima, die Naturlandschaften Kolumbiens saßen weiterhin tief in ihrem Herzen. Claudia hatte schließlich die Idee nach Kolumbien zurückzukehren und sich wieder auf das Land einzulassen, in dem sie und ihr Bruder geboren wurden.

Medellín es conocida por ser la segunda ciudad más influyente de Colombia. La capital de Antioquia que atravesó temporadas difíciles en la década de los ochenta al estar a merced del narcotráfico, se convirtió en una de las ciudades más peligrosas de Latinoamérica a nivel mundial.

Donde el terror reinaba en cada esquina, a todas horas y siendo el principal cesto de crímenes que afectó fuertemente a la población, desde robos, tráficos de personas, cocaína hasta asesinatos. Tragedia, violencia, inseguridad eran algunas de las palabras con las que personas tanto del territorio como fuera de él describían a Medellín. Unos cuantos de sus propios habitantes tomaron la dura decisión de marcharse, abandonando su amada tierra que fue su cuna durante muchos años para conseguir la paz que por desgracia se había perdido en ese entonces.

Uno de los casos más delicados en Medellín fue el de los hermanos Claudia y Rodrigo que a la corta edad de seis años pasaron a ser huérfanos luego de que sus padres Sebastián Montoya (Científico) y Margarita García (Artista) fuesen asesinados por manos del cartel. En busca de nuevos horizontes que les aportara bienestar tanto físico como emocional, los niños se marchan de Colombia hacia los Estados Unidos; enfrentándose a nuevos retos.

Estar fuera de su país natal no fue tarea fácil para estos niños pero tampoco fue imposible, todavía una parte de ellos no se acostumbraba al cambio de nación por más que le beneficiara. La cultura, su gente, el clima, los paisajes naturales, aspectos característicos que eran totalmente distintos en comparación a Colombia donde pertenecían anteriormente. Por más que pasaran los años, Claudia tenía en su cabeza específicamente la idea de volver a Colombia, reconectarse con aquel país en el que sus ancestros nacieron al igual que ella y su hermano.
