¿Cómo sensibilizar a los espectadores para la paz, para un mayor respeto por la vida? Ha sido la pregunta de nuestra generación literaria. "Medea Bacatá" postula respuestas, y el lenguaje cristiano articula ideas propias a la fenomenología de Husserl:

No olvidan que en el otro está el aliento

Que procrea. En él cabe la estima.

"Medea Bacatá" reformula formas heredadas de la tragedia griega antigua. Ya al cabo de mis estudios universitarios había formulado una hipótesis inspirada por las obras de los grandes dramaturgos y las consideraciones de Nietzsche sobre el nacimiento de la tragedia; dado que, a mi modo de ver, el menosprecio era el mal más arraigado de la sociedad colombiana, el poeta tendría que dar voz a la gente más desdeñada por la sociedad: campesinos enloquecidos, mucamas ladronas, desempleados vengativos o sicarios desesperados, cuya historia se repite desde la violencia de los 1940s.

He sabido de vuestros percances

De abortos, de violaciones consumidas

De hurtos que propagaron venganzas

Azuzados por políticos tunantes

Que sin rubor sacrificaron alianzas.

Las pasiones destructivas de Orestes o Antígona no son, después de todo, un patrimonio exclusivo de las grandes familias, tal y como Aristóteles lo había prescrito en su "Poética". Soy un hombre: nada humano me es ajeno, fue la frase de Terencio que consolidó mi perspectiva humanística en una era de literaturas agnósticas: Homo sum, humani nihil a me alienum puto.

Más aún, los dramas más descarnados abundan en los arrabales de Bogotá. "Medea Bacatá" representa una tragedia en un lenguaje que no pretenda ser una reproducción del lenguaje coloquial; como en el teatro del T.S. Eliot, Schiller, Shakespeare o Eurípides los personajes de "Medea Bacatá" divagan en verso:

¿Qué es el hombre?

Alguien que naufraga, historia añeja,

Bajo las olas de ese mar sin nombre,

Impredecible, en que navega.

"Medea Bacatá" se basa en una historia real: en 1993, mientras me sumía en el estudio del griego antiguo en la Universidad Javeriana, leí la crónica de una mujer que había envenenado a su marido y sus tres hijos. El relato fue publicado en "El Espacio", pasquín amarillista, a lo largo de una semana. La historia mantenía semejanzas con la de Medea, cuya trama había contemplado como posible tema de una tragedia clásica varios años atrás. Tras meses de investigación periodística escribí la primera versión de "Medea Bacatá", de 1111 versos (60 minutos aprox.), la cual tuvo una breve temporada en la Alianza Francesa de Bogotá en 1994 intitulada "Hermíone" -en razón del personaje secundario-. Años viajando por el mundo me persuadieron de reescribir la obra, la cual fue ampliada a 1536 versos (100 minutos aprox.), más aún cuando Camilo Hernández me comentó que mi obra había sido representada varias veces en el Teatro Nacional por alumnos de la Academia Charlot en los 1990s.

A pesar del origen bárbaro de su módelo clásico, "Medea" es una tragedia contemporánea. Sus coros representan a mujeres desplazadas, víctimas de crímenes atroces:
