About the Book

In the summer of 1944 in Auschwitz, the future great writer Primo Levi meets Jean Samuel, a young Alsatian Jew, deported just like him, and facing the unimaginable. As a term of endearment, he calls him Pikolo. Three years later, with his masterpiece "If This Is a Man," Primo Levi turns Pikolo into a mythical character, the embodiment of dignity preserved in the face of horror, of the humanity that nothing can destroy. Forgotten witness, discreet hero, Jean Samuel is a survivor who kept his wounds secret for many years. After more than 60 years of silence, he shares within these pages his memories of the concentration camp, his encounter with Primo Levi, the exceptional moments they shared, what it meant to continue living after Auschwitz, and his reunion with the Italian author. Additionally, Jean Samuel shares the letters he and Primo Levi exchanged through the years.""
About the Author: Jean Samuel is an Auschwitz survivor who befriended Italian writer Primo Levi while they were both in the concentration camp. Jean-Marc Dreyfus is a historian who specializes in the Holocaust of Eastern Europe. He has written several books on the subject.
